Crazy idea or money saving genius? Its just a garage. Buying it with cash. Adding an extra £500 to the purchase price to pay a solicitor seems excessive. Has anyone done it? I’ve found a few online guides but they are also filled with warnings. Just filing out a few forms or a legal minefield.

I did it when I bought a bit of garden from my neighbour. Not much more than a bit of form filling, plus watching out for the other party’s solicitor ‘adding value’. In my case they added in a clause forbidding anything over 6 feet high because they thought they should. When I asked what I was supposed to do with the shed/fence/tree already on the land they removed the clause straight away.

Mum did our house about thirty years ago – i think she just got a book from the library and followed what it said.

Thanks. Have done a bit more reading and it seems straight forward. Its an auction property so a lot of the first stages with searches etc are done. I think I’ll be giving it a go.
