  • H2O Flooded Engine Part 2 – Insurance?

Last time on 'How Fuct is my engine?'

So, I took the plugs out last night, all came out with a bead of water between the contacts and one was very wet.

I imagine this signifies that its pretty terminal. Going to hand crank it and see how much water comes out and then try and see if the push rods are bent.

Anyone know if you can claim for engine damage of this type through your insurance? Ive never had to claim for anything before so not quite sure how it works.

Are you fully comp? Can I have your engine and box?

If you're fully comp then yes you can. A friend of mine had to a couple of years ago when the big sheffield floods happened and he had no problems.

Yeah fully comp on classic policy with agreed value.

Fraid I cant let you have the box as its a custom built job to match the engine. If I drop a new engine in then i'll prob keep the old one and rebuild it over time – maybe as a basis for another project…

I'll have to see what they say.

Good plan, a nice long term rebuild project, I was only being cheeky TBH (looking for a kitcar powerplant!) – I'm sure you'll have no problems with the insurance if you take that route. Did you manage to turn it over by hand or have you not got round to that yet? If you're anywhere near Glasgow I'd happily throw in a hand or two to check it all out.

Wish I was mate! Based in the west midlands. Could do with all the help I can get! However I do have a friendly Subaru specialist just down the road from work. Until this year I knew nothing about engines. Since the cambelt went Ive had to learn alot and fast.

I havent turned it by hand – its rather difficult with the radiator being in the way somewhat so im going to have to get a socket on the crank pully bolt and turn it that way.

I really need to find somewhere to work on it – its on the road / pavement at. My place is on road paqrking and my parents drive is about 45degrees!

Need to find somewhere with a garage or at least some flat hardstand!

Yeah it's hard to work on a car on the road. Local pub carpark you can push it to and ask nicely?

Good luck with it, you may yet find it's a simple electrical fault on the starter circuit. Try marking the pulley with a pen, putting it in 5th and giving it a shove then checking if it moved the pulley. If you can push it the engine probably isn't seized (though it might not be well still/have bent rods).

Only got 4 gears… Will it still work ? 😛

Knowing what my luck is like and the fact ive seen water on the plugs probably means its dead.

I dont have a lot of luck with cars! Or women for that matter.

Whats the saying? 'if its got wheels or breasts its going to give you grief…'

Hmmmmm, i'm in the east mids and am currently in the process of buying a house (hopefully by end of aug/early sept, we're in the both sides shouting at solicitors phase) which has a tandem garage that i'm not planning on putting anything in until februaryish, would that potentially be of use to you if it doesn't all go utterly tits up?

Thats a very kind offer Sobriety, thank you very much. I'll see what the insurance say they may make me go to an approved garage or something if I get to do it myself I'll what happens!
