I’ve been taking it since Aug 08 due to a knee injury. And more recently with MSM complex.
I believe my injury is cartilage rather than ligament or tendons since it’s only just started to get 100%. It’s very hard to comment on it’s efficacy since the healing time for this sort of injury hasn’t shortened – but some cartilage injuries simply don’t heal at all – so maybe the GS and MSM has worked some magic?
All I know is I’m back to playing 5-a-side again at nearly full pelt and I’ve been cross country running again. Today with my 10yr old daughter 😀

So yes, I’ll continue taking it.

Holland and Barratt seems to be the cheapest place to buy on the high street.

    Dosage wise – I’m on about 1500mg a day.

oh and my aching elbow got better recently too.

……He has been on it for about 10 months for bad hips. Every time he went for a walk longer than 30 mins he would be limping the next day, he can probably do about 2 hours now. We noticed the improvment after about 2 months.

Its very cheap if you get it from healthy direct about £17 per year.

I’ve been greatly restricted on the bike due to crippling knee pain. Specialist said arthritis, Physio said fallen arches. from last November took large dose Glucosamine sulphate and Condroitin, and bought some superfeet insoles in January. I’m now pain free and riding a couple of times a week (not counting the 5 min daily commute).
I couldn’t honestly say whether it was the drugs or insoles, but I’m reluctant to stop taking either for fear of the “return of pain”.

    Cheers

    Thanks for the replies

I have has a dodgy knee for the last 15 years, had key hole twice with no real improvement. Not bad enough to stop me riding but enough to nag at me..

Just got a big tub from Boots so will give it a go (and selling my singlespeed but thats another story)

    Cheers

Seems to work for me (I’m old, it keeps me active). Remember that you need to be taking it for a few weeks before you’ll feel the benefit.

Did nothing for me – perhaps ‘cos I’m sceptical. I took it for 4 months and had no noticeable reduction in pain.

as far as I am aware no proper controlled studies have shown any improvement measured objectively but – and its a big but critics of the studies say they are poorly designed studies. There is a lot of anecdotal evidence it works as posted above and again as far as I know there are no downsides to taking it.

Try it and see – check the dosages of what you take as some tablets contain more than others.

Yep, been taking it for around 10 years now cos I used to do a lot of running. It really reduced my aches and pains but I am an old girl!

Don’t run any more but still take 1500g (with chondroitin) every day from healthspan.co.uk. Cheaper than Boots, H & B.

One or two folk from this forum will tell you that I’m not bad for my age 😉

As druid says, it will take a while to kick in.

    Disclaimer – I am not a medic.

my vet recomends it for the dog, 4 doctors said it may be of some use, oe said it woldnt poison me andy any thing else was a bonus.

natures best.co.uk usualy has it fairly cheep

my dosage is 2000mg a day

get the with condroitin ones, apparently glucosamine is pretty much worthless as your body makes enough naturaly but a bit more may help. condroitin sucks water into the joint and helps cushion it.

the stuff i got also has ginger and rosehip extracts, no idea how usefull they are, but i’ve gone from not being able to walk to considdering buying another bike in under a month so cant be all that bad.

My mother-in-law noticed a increase in joint pain when she stopped taking it after having taken glucosamine for a few years.

I’ve taken it in fits and spurts over the last few years. My knees generally feel better when I’m taking it. So I reckon it’s worth it.

I can speak for no-one but me, but it helped me greatly after years of nagging pain following a double cruciate tear and cartilage removal

I had no pain but all my joints used to click a lot, wrists, elbows, feet, ankles etc.
I’ve been taking it for just over a year and i very rarely get a noise from any joint. I get mine from simply suppliments, 9 quid for a years supply!

problem with glucosamine is much of the things it is meant to help will heal over time anyway. I have used it and been quite convinced with the benefits but have stopped a while ago and not had any problems that glucosamine would help since.

I also think recent evidence suggests that it is just as effective as a placebo.

But as it is so cheap if there is something that may be solved with glucosamaine I would take it again.

Cheapest place I found was Wilkinsons.

I have heard from a few runners that they noticed no noticeable difference.

This thread is as scientific as my conversations with then and seems to point to a benefit.

Seems to be good advice. However are there any known side effects?

I cant say wether Glucosamine works but a dose of cod liver oil every day definitely helps me get my aching body through the winter.

I play seniors rugby with a guy who travels to training and matches using his senior citizens travel pass and he swears by a spoonful of cod liver oil every day

I believe it’s good. I nearly broke my neck (not on a bike, something a bit more dangerous), three years ago. It helped sort me out. I notice if I stop taking it for a period, – more clicks and aching in the neck.
Take MSM also, – and I’d recommend a daily tablespoon (or quantity that works for you) of of flax oil to go with it.

Healthspan do a vegan version, in case you are concerned about more damage to ecosystems from standard shellfish derived Glucosamine. (Similar price, free delivery and money off coupons knocking about on the web).
