Bah, weeks after I buy a 500, they go and announce the 800. Mapping + 500 style and features. Looks really nice.

I've just bought a 305, very happy with it, but anoyed by the number of new models that are coming out so soon after I've splashed out!

Why? If it does what you want / need, what's the problem?

Unless they slash the price as a result.

Can't see a touchscreen being at all usable with gloves…

Was looking at the 705 to upgrade my 305, as its getting a bit tatty now, but depends how much the 800 will cost, and if the 705 is reduced as a result.

Mmm. Does look nice. Plus "Custom maps" compatability suggests you may be able to get "OS like" maps on there some how???

My garmin touch screen works with gloves on.

I means Ordinance Survey not opperating system 😯

I doubt you'd get OS stuff on there from the looks of it 😯

However the custom maps mayeb a route as you say esp as OrdS has gone OS (open source 😉 )

I thought the release of the 705 would reduce the price of the 305 but it didn't seem to happen. If anything, the opposite happened. The 305 is quite old now, so I wouldn't get too upset about new models coming out.
I've a 500 and think it's great and while this 800 looks cool, I like the small size of the 500. I wish they'd do more software updates on existing models though.

True, but the new one will walways have "nice to have's" that the old one doesnt, even if the old one works perfectly well.

Custom maps means that you can use os maps for a good price.

Typically I've just bought a 500 too but the 800 looks just the ticket. Probably priced out of my budget anyway.

Hmm – not looking good on the pricing front. They've given the surround a Carbon Fibre weave finish – normally an excuse for a big price 🙂

    Does Look Nice Though….

You can use something Mobile Atlas Creator & MultiMap to create a Garmin custom map of an OS map

Cost – $449 to $649 in the US depending what bits you want with it

Perhaps is a CF look not real CF ? 🙂

After washing my 705 in the washing machine I can vouch for the waterproofing 🙂

Hmm if it had a decent amoled screen and native OS mapping I'd be tempted to upgrade form my 705 but as it looks now it's not very compelling.

I use Dakota 450 with its large touch screen is great with gloves and 1:50k OS mapping. Brilliant and it has HR and cadence capability.

Agreed – my 205 finally gave up the ghost after a good few years use; I thought "they'll be old and cheap now, I'll just get another" but the price wasn't far off what I bought the first one for!

It gave me an excuse to just go the whole hog and get a 605 which is ace… 🙂

Fail. The one thing the 705 really needed (apart from a better interface) was an electronic compass. The one thing most other Garmins have, and this one still doesn't? An electronic compass…

    The e-mail announcement I received says –

"Available with Garmin GB Discoverer 1:50k Ordnance Survey mapping for the whole of Britain and you can thrash ot your ride before you go with our free Base Camp route planning software"

It's also got a screen shot of it running an OS map.

DC Rainmaker is the daddy for Garmin information & reviews.

I asked a (supposed) specialist UK GPS/HRM company a question about the Forerunner 310XT. Their answer was, no, you can't do what I wanted.

Then I found Mr Rainmaker's review and it had screenshots of how to do what I wanted 8)

Yeah that is one serious review !

Is this running Garmin GB Discoverer 1:50k OS for sure ? If yes I'm sold…

Looks good – I'd be worried about the elastic bands on the bar mount on an MTB?

For those of you who use garmin custom maps, how much useabe area can you get on a device.

I know the limit is 100 tiles at 1024×1024, but not really sure what that translates to in the real world.

Also, how do custom maps compare to the Garmin supplied OS in terms of quality and features etc.

with just the base map should you be able plot a route on your pc , up load it to the garmin then follow it on or off road ?

just wondering why you would want to buy another map for the garmin

sorry if its a silly question i know nothing about them.

From my limited research into garmins the basic map you get with it is pretty dire but there are plenty of free map services you can download. That's good as the cost of the gb discoverer maps adds at least another 100 quid on top..

foxyrider, apparently it's the same mount as the 500 that my mate has and so far it's been rock solid…

do none of you use open source maps then? free and you can get them for pretty much everywhere, so you dont need to buy anything when you go on holiday either :0)

You are right about the touchscreen and gloves, cannot really use it. And in this weather gloves are a must.

Going to try fingerless gloves and see how i get on. It is a brilliant bit of kit though when coupled with the maps.
