And if you ran a business I was a prospective customer of, I wouldn’t be afterwards

..and that's a risk I might take.

Hamsters appear to have reverted to v1.0. Really slow to load a new page. Firefox on Mint 18.3

Sometimes. Sometimes their post vanishes, sometimes they get 10 if them.

The former was isolated and fixed days ago.  The latter is caused by impatiently clicking on "submit" ten times, it should be blocked but isn't currently.

Is there? Perhaps instructions on this could be provided as a sticky?

It's been mentioned several times on this thread.  Under "Forums" in your profile.

And if you ran a business I was a prospective customer of, I wouldn’t be afterwards.

I thought your status as a customer had been clearly defined previously.

I'm not wading through n(+ or - an indeterminate number it seems) but please, please, please can we have the old forum history page back.

I've been dropping in and out lately (events) and it's really hard to find threads where you've posted but didn't start (your posts are visible, but no links to original thread).

And of course, editing posts is not possible either.

It is, just not on rambling threads like this one.  Again, discussed at length a page or two back.  It's a known glitch and will be fixed.

Zokes, I take your points and I agree with many of them.  But sitting and bitching about a free forum which you support neither with a subscription nor (IIRC) adverts just makes you come across as self-entitled.  It does neither yourself nor the forum any favours.

Seriously, just chill.  This too will pass.

After V1.0 Hamster comment was posted taken back to page 25 to re-enter the seventh circle of hell. I was unable to edit that post at all to add this piece.

“and that’s a risk I might take.”

That’s fine, but take that attitude with enough customers and you won’t have a business at all. Probably moreso if you accuse them of lying: I probably know more about my own job than you do.

“I thought your status as a customer had been clearly defined previously.”

And as I have clearly stated many times, despite it being incorrect, that became a self-fulfilling prophecy wrt me purchasing an overseas subscription.

Aside from that, thanks for the tone of your second post Cougar. As with many people, when I’m poked I tend to bite back, though I accept that it’s not that useful. I’ll reign it in. For the record, having been a member for about 14 years, my initial comments came out of concern for the potential fate of a community which I value. There are many other fora that have died.

You miss what risk is. You leave? Meh. The silent majority continue to visit/click ads? Good stuff.7

It'll get fixed, with or without you.

I'm not sure whether to interpret that as sincere or sarcasm.  I wasn't meaning to be a dick, if that's how it came across.

As with many people, when I’m poked I tend to bite back, though I accept that it’s not that useful. I’ll reign it in.

That's appreciated, and understandable.  As you observe, the same is true of others.

For the record, having been a member for about 14 years, my initial comments came out of concern for the potential fate of a community which I value. There are many other fora that have died.

And again that's appreciated.  So please, give a little more thought to how you phrase your criticism.  I'm not singling you out, I got a bollocking off Mark a couple of days ago for what I thought was an amusing tongue-in-cheek little jibe on email which backfired badly.  Measure twice, cut once.

So was a test upgrade made into a test environment first, or was it done straight onto the live site ?

I suspect Mark is rather stressed as his business goes pretty pair shaped, but still no need to bite the folk that are busting their arses on here for free, defending the almost indefensible.

You took a bollocking of someone who doesn't even pay you for the work you do here?

**** that.

Sorry - didn't see the update on the edit button, as for some reason, the thread ended halfway through page 26 for me until just now. So your efforts would have been futile!

Then thank you.

"Bollocking" is probably an exaggeration.  "Chastised" maybe.  And to be fair he was right, I was out of order.

There appears to be no spam filter on the forum. Or the two principal spam filters are currently getting some shut-eye...

Is there a way to forum search?
can't go back to threads i've replied in so how do I go back to a topic to monitor follow ups without trawling through page by page to find it?

Just to check - you don't get paid for being a mod, right? And you're the one at the coal face, taking the flak for this and other forum-related issues? And the owner isn't here, doing the same? And you're receiving bollockings/chastisement from him for something you've said was 'tongue in cheek'? And you're role as a mod is to assess such things on a daily basis? But you're not paid, and receiving bollockings from the owner, who by the very definition of others on here on several threads is 'chippy' and/or 'sarcastic' towards forum users?

Seems legit. 😶

I line-manage a lot of people. I don't do it like that. I rarely agree with all of the mod-related decision making on here, but I have a grudging respect for Drac and Cougar for their attempts at getting it right. Sounds like a bit of a one-sided relationship to me.

It’s really not like that at all Bullheart, Mark on a very rare occasion might just say “Sorry guys but can we do it like that” or “Please refrain from doing that”. In all honesty I’d struggle to recall when he last felt the need to do so but it would have been in an informative way not a bollocking or a chastising. I know nothing of Cougar’s episode as Mark would have contacted him direct, rightly so. Cheers for your reluctant respect but rest assured if I ever felt the modding was too much or Mark did act heavy I’d move on.

I dunno, Drac. It’s well documented how hard it can be to move on from an abusive relationship.

Don't feel victimised zippy it's the same for all of us. It's one of the new features. Like the classifieds no longer being sticky so you can bump it back to top if you so desired.

A mod will be along to explain the edit thing wasposted a few pages back.

Just a thought but would a sticky with a single post (or at least only editable by mods) with an on-going list of known bugs be a good idea just to stop the same "quoting doesn't work" or "editing isn't working" posts from appearing several times in 50% of threads? No guarantee it'd get read mind...

Page width on my Android/Chrome phone seems to have been fixed. There are now two format buttons on the second row of that toolbar (it was previously one) and the text no longer scrolls left, meaning that the Submit button also stays fully on the screen.

A drop in traffic is what will spur any additional resource/panic, not us lot

Given how well the site does in google searches for a huge variety of topics, that traffic drop might be slow in coming, even if new posts tail off. But agreed.

FWLIW, it's pretty messy - both the upgrade and the way it's been handled.
