Worth noting bike theft in Cathays roath canton and Ely is bad. Even the cops tell me they can't believe how bad is got. I'd choose OLD st mellons quick country lane access to Caerphilly from castleton or there's peterstone. Id never live in Cardiff. Risca and cwmcarn have great trails and much more relaxed.
Folk in the Cardiff area - recommend me somewhere to live
And if you dont want to ride on a dual carriageways, or go past industrial estates then plot your route to avoid them .. its not hard to do.
I'd like to see your routes then I'm not saying there aren't nice roads, but getting to them without the dross isn't easy. I've got a lovely 3 hour route towards Chepstow and then Usk, but you have to go through Newport both out and back.
Id never live in Cardiff. Risca and cwmcarn
Risca is (as far as I can tell) a giant housing development with a strip of run down chippies and hairdressers, and Cwmcarn is the same but smaller. Cardiff on the other hand is a vibrant small city with great shopping, museums, parks, beautiful suburubs, concert halls, cinemas, clubs, restaurants and loads more. No brainer imo!
I would not go for Old St Mellons, too far from Town. In Roath you can walk 2 mins to local shops or 20 mins to town, which is lovely. No cars required.
We moved to Cardiff last year and live near the Heath just over the A48 next to the cemetery, there are plently if houses to rent as landlords are finding it harder to rent to students as the Uni is offering very cheap accomodation, so not too many students and the ones that are here tend to be medical students and not at all rowdy. Handy for the Heath, Roath Park and it`s only a few minutes on the bike to the river, so turn right for the hills or left for your commute to Llandough. One of the main reasons we chose here is I need to get out to the motorway or down to the train station on the bike for work, both very easy. Better coffee shops in Roath but I kinda like it here, very good neighbourly vibe and very friendly, Whitchurch road is functional for shops but could be a bit more shi shi I guess.
Heath is nice. Catfood lives near Cyclopedia too which is the best LBS ever.
If you're commuting to Llandough and she is commuting to the Heath, then I reckon Canton/Pontcanna is your best bet. The access to art-house cinema, good pubs, sport, trails, etc., can hardly be beat. And the house prices are pretty good in Canton at least.
Plus, Canton is home to the Bike Shed, which is the best LBS ever (pace molgrips )
I live in Roath cannot recommend highly enough
we regularly walk into the city centre, we have great neighbours and community; amazing restaurants and shops
I ride out to Castell Coch / Garf / Caerphilly in 30mins
2 mins to A48 / M4 too
I lived in London for 20 years and when we moved back we looked at North Cardiff and surrounding vale villages etc and although lovely we wanted a bit more of a cultural mix hence Roath
HOLY THREAD RESURRECTION BATMAN!!!!!!!!!
For the resurrectee: I moved to Whitchurch in Dec 2012. It suits us down to the ground - nice high street with a couple of nice pubs, all the shops you need, easy to get into town by bike/car/bus. For MTB, Taff trail to Tongwynlais and as much riding as you can shake a stick at.
All of that applies to Llandaff North as well really - you're just a tiny bit closer to town, a tiny bit further from the country, and artisan organic pesto-infused bread is a little harder to come by
Since this thread has been resurrected - anyone in the area fancy meeting up for jey-xc-mince-lite? I ride with Ajax pretty regular but have yet to find any other roadies who 'cross over' as it were.
I will do at some point. Do you do lunchtime or evenings? SaxonRider may be dragged out too at some point I think
I can indeed be dragged.
I am around a bit more now, molgrips, if you're not off to London. Perhaps an evening this week or next?
Hah, now I'm away until Weds evening! Thurs and Fri are on though.
