depends if you want an SS/internal geared one or a proper roadie with a flat bar. And if you want something niche…..

    budget?

I've got a Dawes Discovery 601, had it 6yrs now but manage to do loads on it and in the Turbo trainer. Got a lovely gearing system, Deore, it's smashing and really lightweight. Got some skinny tyres on it now and whoosh….

How much do you want to spend? I've got a Revolution Courier Race- the older 1×8, 700c one- and it's a great commuter. Not too flash, not too light, just rugged and unglamorous and costs nothing to keep on the road. Heavier than most for the same reason but if you're going flat barred then I'm guessing it's transport rather than 100 mile road rides you have in mind…

I recently got a Bad Boy – very stealth, 26 inch wheels, discs, flat bars, it's so stealth even the rotor arms, chain and cassette are black (for a wee while at least) Finished off with some DMR V8's in black and some black crud catchers…..it is a bit black though…… 😆

    kaffenback is too small……….

If you're going by frame size, they're compact frames, so 3 or 4 cm smaller than they should be.

I had an XL and it fitted me fine

Kona Cyclocross bike with flat bars, xt discs and 10 speed flat bar shifters……just felt wrong so drops and cable discs fitted and the parts removed consigned to the spares bin (only the 10 speed shifters left now tho)

I'm thinking of a flat-bar roadie to replace my proper road bike.

Paulo, that Kaff looks good – I remember you selling it. What size tyres can you get under guards? Also sizing – I'm 6'1" (actually, I'm an inch shorter after the accident 🙁 ) – I reckon a Large? Or maybe XL if it's a flat bar?

Several folks in the office have Bad Boys they got via bike to work, and all seem happy with them.

Personally I've got a spare Inbred frame and a set of RC31's and will be building a commuter around those and a 26/36/48 chainset.

I've just ordered a Giant Rapid 2 from my LBS. After years of riding MTB only I wanted a training bike and something to pootle down country lanes on in the sunshine (if we ever get any). Man those things are light (to me anyway).

Seems like a reasonable amount of bike for the money, and my LBS did me a good deal on it.

I should get to the pub faster on it anyway, and more drinking time has to be a good thing.

I do like the look of the Lincolnshire Poacher but that's just the tarty side of things more than any opinion about its riding qualities. Personally my flat bar road bike is my own 23 year old Raleigh with bars I picked up from here.

Take a look at CRC they have 2009 Cube bikes at reduced prices. I bought the Cube LTD comp reasonable spec for 399 then I upgraded the brakes to Magura rim brake plus a few other changes ie; pedals saddle and grips. Its quick, well built for the cash and has hybrid qualities if thats what you are after.

My wife has ordered a Giant CRS Alliance. Probably a bit too relaxed for your needs but it's a nice bike. (well, it better be!) She has been waiting almost 6 MONTHS!!! for it! F'kin ridiculous really. Apparently it's due here week 8 but her breath isn't held! Seemingly Giant carbon / Alliance frames are all delayed.
