Apparently my list is low and I need to add some titles.

Its fair to say that my finger has slipped somewhat from the pulse of popular culture. Last one I had was ‘Fair Game’ which was very good. Before that ‘Thor’ which was truly and absolutely bloody awful!

What have you watched recently that’s worth a viewing? You’re recommendations please? Maybe with an exploding helicopter count? Always the benchmark of any motion picture experience

    This:

Monsters is a 2010 British science fiction film, written, shot and directed by Gareth
Edwards. Whitney Able and Scoot McNairy star in the lead roles. …

I watched it last night on Film4 and it was excellent.

They’re running an English Directors season, well worth keeping an eye out.

Unstoppable is good. Tony Scott film with Denzel Washington and Chris Pine.
Monsters, watched it last night too. Not and action film but very good still.

    The Lives of Others
    Mesrine I & II
    Tell No-one
    Un Prophet
    The Secret In Their Eyes
    The Killing Series 1

Anyone giving him any ideas about anything with subtitles shot almost in the dark with a morbid theme will be taken outside and shot….

…..just a warning….the last few films have been depressing and shockingly ‘on trend’ but boring as hell I’d actually prefer some exploding helicopters

AND my choices keep disappearing from the list…. funny that….. 😈

I liked Let the Right one in if it was the proper old version you mean and not the remake by the Americans that was good.

The exploding helicopter scale is exactly how Mrs Rusty and I rate our films.
    Pride and Prejudice 0/10
    Black Hawk Down 6/10
Die Hard 4 11/10 (triple points for John McClane vs F35 fighter jet)

I saw the title of this thread and thought – Monsters, typical its the first suggestion – great film, works really well and not what you’d expect from the title

Cheers for the suggestions folks. I have handed over responsibility for choosing over to the better half and I await exploding helicopters aplenty 😀

try Mephisto if you can find it. a german film.

the usual Faustian story but set in 1930s Germany with an actor selling his soul to the nazis in return for eternal fame.

only ever seen it once but remember it being very good.

If you haven’t seen it How I Ended This Summer is very very very good. I think it has a helicopter too but don’t think it explodes.

Quite enjoyed The Mist, which I probably wouldn’t have watched if I had read about it first (Stephen King – egads !) but is good.

I pad mine out with TV Series – Spartacus Blood and Sand was good dirty fun, more for me playing “spot the kiwi Actor/Rugby league player” game and the hilarious accents and the surprising historical accuracy. Nothing to do with the beefcake. No no no…

Twin Peaks was released recently on DVD – and I think you might have been around the first time. Not too dated either I didn;t think, no cell phones but thats about it.

Dead mans shoes, wag the dog and la haine. Dms is a revenge flick – shane meadows, low budget and ace. Wtd is about a spin doctor getting the president out a sticky situation and is very funny with a hugge cast and la haine is a french subtitled movie about some young hoodlum types who end up with a cops gun. Also get fargo which you have probably seen.

I have mentioned this site before, but now that it has won a national award for writing, it is worth consulting on movies:

It’s not my work, but I know the writer and I love his take on films.

Just finished watching Mesrine 1 & 2 over 2 nights after adding it based on Deadly & Jools recommendation…ta for that as they were both superb films. I know there is a bit of artistic licence but amazed the films are based on a true story…top stuff.
