If I have been running and my legs ache I have a nice hot bath with radox in it to relax them because I am a big girl. I've seen that athletes do the opposite and sit in a bath full of ice to get their muscles to recover.
Which is best and why?

Being a physiotherapist I would say go for the cold option. The purpose of the cold bath is to reduce swelling related to the microtrauma that occurs during the run.

Cold, it works a treat. Finish the run with a light warm down, stretch out for 10 mins and then climb in a cold bath.

But, before you get into the bath (i.e. within 20 mins of finishing exercise), drink a protein recovery drink. Legs will ache much less the following day.
I use up to 50g whey protein powder in 500ml liquid (300ml fruit juice/200ml water). Milk is good, but I undertsand that the predominant protein (casein) takes longer to absorb.

I'd not have a cold bath, because I'm not enough of a tough guy! But a real hot one does cause more vasodilation, and therefore more bruising / tenderness.
I also subscribe to the choclate milk theory of protein shakes. It's cheaper and it tastes nice.

I've read the ice cold shower or bath after sports is a myth. However, this could have been sexed up for the purpose of war by Smee.
On the otherhand, I've read the use of compression clothing does aid recovery.

I'm with ourmaninthenorth. What you eat or drink immediately after is more important than the temperature of you bath IMO.

recovery frinks do too.dunno bout a cold bath - you'd have to pay me to try that.

a good leg massage seems to help my legs feel less heavy the next day. also a light warmup type exercise followed by stretching seems to make you feel better.
No idea if any of this stuff recovery you quicker but make me feel better.Posted 2 years ago #
