A friend wants to go to England(*) on holiday, but she’d like to go to a fully self-catering rural Gite – does such a thing exist in the UK?

* She said England, but she’s Spanish and that probably includes Scotchland and Wales too…

Isn’t a Gite more like a bunkhouse or independent hostel rather than a B&B or self catering cottage. A bit more cheap and cheerful, no?

I thought a gite was just a self catering cottage.

gite’s can mean all sorts! generally though they do tend to be self catered… and that’s where the similarities end! Some are like bunkhouses, some are like hostels, some are like b&b’s, some are for groups, some individuals….. I’ve seen all sorts described as a ‘gite’

All the ones I’ve ever stayed in were not nearly as ‘luxurious’ as your average self catering cottage in the UK, so I’m just wondering what kind of budget the OP’s friend will be thinking of.

No idea what the budget is, but I don’t think expensive came into it!

There’s an outfit called The Landmark Trust that specialise in really unique places like the one in the photo above. You have to become a member and they are quite pricey but I think you’ll find the same goes for National Trust places. There are lots of cottages to rent outside of those 2 orginisations though.
Worth noting that places get booked up quickly in England and if they are serious about renting somewhere, the clock is definately ticking.

It’s worth looking at sites like owners direct and holiday lettings as well.
