I am going for a full day at CyB in a couple of weeks and I was wanting to use Endomondo on my jesus phone. However I don't think the battery will get me past lunch let alone the end of the day. As there is no mobile signal to speak of will Endomondo still work if I turn on aeroplane mode? And if I do will that increase the battery life enough to get me through the day?

How about trying it with airline mode tonight, then if it works, charge the battery fully and then use it on the w/e?
Pretty sure that airplane mode switches off the GPS on my old 3GS - you need to switch off the network instead. That said, I still don't reckon it'll manage a full day unless you get one of those add on battery packs or charge while you have lunch.
I think I have run Endomondo in aeroplane mode on my HTC Desire - or at least I do turn 3G off. Don't really need mails and Tweets while riding!
It still only lasts about 4-5 hours I think (even though the phone will do 2-3 days with 3G off and little use) so I'd reckon all day could be pushing it.
I'm pretty sure airplane mode turns off the GPS as well.
When in Spain a couple of weeks ago I'd turned the data roaming off and it lasted about 7 hours, that was on a fully charged 3gs.
Just checked - GPS appears to lock on in 'airplane' mode on my Desire. I think it's because GPS is a reciever only, not a transmitter.
Having a desire S now, I noticed that but I'm pretty sure it doesn't work like that on iPhones.

Enable airplane mode from the Settings screen on iPhone. When you turn on airplane mode, the following wireless connections/receivers are turned off:■Cellular (voice and data)
■Wi-Fi
■Bluetooth
■GPS
Strange! The GPS icon flashes, then locks and Endomondo reports 'GPS OK'. Desk isn't travelling too fast so can't see if it's logging data though.
edit - ooops, that's for Apple! Will test the Desire and let you know (not that that'll help the iPhone users....)
Boooo damd these silly smart phones and their small batteries. I was thinking about getting some sort of solar charger and strapping to the outside of my bag but that was looking like it would cost quite a bit.
Eerrm. 12V battery in my bag and use the car charger?
Endomondo drinks battery life like nothing else I have used. Shame really as it is great
do any other GPS sports tracking apps use less battery than Endomondo?
I've used Endomondo for 8 hrs on my Nexus S. I turned data transfer off and had the screen turned off, just left it running in my pocket.
I often use it for 3-4 hrs with data transfer and music playing as well, to be fair to Endomondo any app running using GPS and storing data in memory / writing data to card will use some juice.
You can get little devices that connect via USB and just put a normal AA battery in it. That gives you a lot more run-time.
dunno if its the same for iphone but on android, endomondo pro has a low power mode, no idea if it works either as i just have the free version.
It uses very little juice on my Nokia C5-03 (symbian). On a recent 4.5 hr ride the battery level barely moved from full.
Hmmm, on my Nokia 5800 (also Symbian, s60) a couple of hours commuting can wipe out the battery almost totally. I have a few network blackspots on my route though and still use it normally during the day so that might have an effect.

I've managed to get 4 and a half hours out of my Endomondo on SE X10 Mini Pro with a decent hour or so stop in the middle for lunch. That's with data transfer off.
On recent 5.5 day C2C jaunt I used Endomondo to track the route. First two days I only got to mid afternoon each day before the battery was dead on my HTC. Probably because GPS combined with the phone constantly hunting for a signal that wasn't there, uses a lot of juice.
For the rest of the trip I used Airplane mode and easily got through the longest days (>10 hours of riding).
I use Endo Pro too having used the free version for a few weeks to see how I got on with it.
I've a GalaxyS BTW.
I run the "low power mode" with the sync/wireless/gps off. Endo uses it's own gps through the stock build gps on the phone. So far the free version sucked out after 5hrs, now with the Pro version and other things turned off I've gotten 8hrs. I've not tested how long in total it runs before the battery melts itself cos' my last ride finished after 7hrs and I turned it off after I'd finished packing the bike away and put on the tea.
I have a spare battery I carry on long journeys, charged of course, and if I needed to I'd just use that. I've been carrying spare batteries for a while now, cos' the first time I use the Nav on the phone whilst in Italy it melted after 4hrs and I left the charger back at the hotel, so I bought another battery and keep that charged.
I too have a substitute AA battery pack that I bought from Maplin it has a solar power charger built into it and it's pretty good for trickle charge/topup. I've never taken it on a ride though so can't help there.
I found everytrail less battery hungry than endomondo.
I'm loving my HTC Desire HD - Endomondo app. Free version BTW...

Cyclemeter is better than endomondo and I did c2c in a day in the summer. 12 hours no problems. Still had 20% left.
Get a backup battery and stick the phone on charge in your bag in the middle of the day.
on HTC desire airplane turns off the tx functions, not the rx functions so gps will still work.
As above - switch off radio and leave the GPS on (works fine on Desire). You can do a manual upload to Endomondo when you finish for the day.

Depends on your contract. If it's downloading maps then yes, it'll use data and if you're not on an unlimited contract or you go over your limit it could cost you. That said, you have to use a lot of data to go over most limits IME.
