Similar to differences between mech DA and mech Ultegra - a bit heavier, bushes rather than bearings etc. Clever marketing - unlikely to impact on DA Di2 sales, as that's bought by those who have to have the best, but will sell well to those for whom that was rather too expensive.Posted 11 months ago # -

Di2 is superb, but I think I'd only go for it on a frame specifically designed for it - looks a bit messy otherwise IMO.

I'm still waiting for electronic SR - after all 11 has to be better than 10 - hoping I might have a new job and some of my redundancy money left to afford it by the time that appears!

Cos people might want to run DA mech but Ultegra shifters or something. Happens all the time in MTBing, mixing and matching groupsets and although roadies tend to stick with one complete groupset, it's nice to have the option of mixing and matching.
Thing is, Ultegra had to be a lot simpler in order to hit the price point so they've done away with some of the connections.

What he said, if you already have DA-Di2, then you've bought into a system with no cheep spares already.
If you buy the ultegra-Di2 you're buying the cheeper system so won't be bothered that its not compatible with the expensive one?
Possibly 11s DA in the pipeline and they want the connectors to be different? Afterall there's no cable to pull so a 10s shifter could be upgraded to 11s with new firmware?
Has anyone hacked it yet? Presubably once campag make one then with a little enginuity any choice of mechs/cassettes/wheels/shifters should be possible?

In some ways I can see why Shimano would do it that way: a lot of riders upgrade by "creep" (ie your XT rear mech breaks, you buy an XTR as a replacement, your Deore chainset wears out, you get an XT or good quality aftermarket one) and the same would presumably happen on road. I guess they're just keeping life simple by keeping cross-compatibility out of the equation.
They also need to hit a price point and there's probable future upgrades and tweaks to be made to both groupsets so what they've done makes sense.
Electronic shifting is the future so having 2 different systems is probably as good a way of achieving trickle down as any.

So compatibility isn't actually a real problem for anybody on here complaining about it? IMHO compatibility between the two is more a theoretical than real issue - you're either going to want the best or the cheapest (I doubt anybody who can afford DA Di2 is that bothered about cheap spares). In any case it seem it's only likely to be a problem if you already have DA Di2, as word on the street is that 2012 DA Di2 will get the same upgraded connections (cue whinging about compatibility between old and new DA Di2 - which would at least have a more reasonable basis).

i run it on my mtb - if i spong my rear mech a choice would have been nice should a decent priced dura-ace not be available

But you fitted it knowing that it was incredibly expensive, and that a busted mech was a real possibility. The fact a cheaper version that's incompatible has come along is irrelevant.
It seems like DA will get the new wiring/connectors, then as aracer says there's incompatibility between old and new DA - that's more annoying!

To all the idiots: it obviously would've been nice if shimano had made the two compatible, to give everyone lots more options. They haven't, because they want to make more money. I don't think anyone is going to be shedding tears over this, so calm down.
The more interesting thing is the estimated RRP of £1100, when normal ultegra goes for £900. £200 for upgrade to Di2 sounds awesome..

FTFYI'm guessing most people on here are too young to remember that 8-speed Ultetgra etc. was incompatible with 8-speed DA for similar development reasons.

It is not only the connectors that will change, the actual wires themselves and they way they transmit signals will change. I would assume this is to keep the price down where as the Dura Ace version is all about keeping the weight as low as possible.

The new wires are lighter. It's just development - I've not read a lot about the difference, but it seems they've gone from a multi-wire to a 2 wire system. Instead of having discrete signals for each operation it's now coded and multiplexed on a bus - more complex to engineer, but it's the way most stuff is done nowadays. Hence why the assumption has to be DA will also take this up - as i just mentioned it's not the first time DA has pioneered something but lower groups have then been developed past it.Posted 11 months ago # -
I'll bet that DA Di2 will have the different/thinner wires when the next version comes out. TBH if you buy something that's right at the cutting edge (eg Di2 when it came out) then you're naive if you expect it to be compatible with future developments.

looks great, next road bike will be electric shifting, but looking at a few years time so hopefully 3rd or 4th gen at 105 level & when bike manufactures have figured out where to integrate the battery into the frame better than it is now.
