Time to put on your creative caps!

I have a colleague at work who – together with his wife – is an avid cyclist and general outdoorsperson. In the last while, however, his wife has been diagnosed with a serious health issue (MS, I believe), and is no longer able to pedal as she was. In light of this, my colleague and I were talking about ways he might enable her to keep riding with him.

He felt that she would not be able to pedal with him using a tandem, and so he was wondering aloud about the feasibility of a tag along for an adult.

Does anyone else have any other ideas or suggestions? I know there have been some fantastic-looking cargo bikes and other contraptions discussed on here, but what sorts of things would you suggest for two adults to go riding together that would not require as much input from the second adult?

If you can attach pictures to illustrate, that would be great.

    Recumbent tandem?

    Or a custom sidecar?

Or, as you say an adapted cargo bike. eg Surly Big Dummy – these guys seem to be enjoying it:

I would have thought Pino too, perhaps with an electric motor to assist – I’ve built several like that for couples in just this situation.

I passed a couple on something like that Pino in the New Forest recently – him on back, she recumbent in front. Looked a great idea as both can see forward, you’re not looking at someones backside all ride, and you can easily converse.

That Bungee cord has got to be a wind up surely.

Can see it getting interesting in woody singletrack… and what about if it comes off and smacks the following rider in the face.

There are a couple of Australian companies who make a bike tow rope that retracts into a reel attached to the leading bike’s seatpost. It effectively transforms two bikes into a tandem when the following rider is tired.

Nope, I know a couple who use something like that (home made though). You’re only supposed to use it for the bigger hills – if you;re in singletrack or contouring, you detach it

Circe Morpheus. The Pino is very nice, but the price may induce other health issues (cardiac arrest in the case of the Ti version). I have a friend with MS who rides solo on an ICE trike too. But for me the sociability of the Pino/Morpheus would be the biggest incentive. Both compared in Velovision here if interested.

SaxonRider – get in touch with my brother Gavin (cleanerbybike on here). He works for the CTC and can point them in the right direction for assistance with adapted bikes etc.

Beat me too it Jas …

SaxonRider – look me up on the CTC website (http://www.ctc.org.uk/community-outreach/disability) and I will offer some advice and may even be able to point you to a local project where the couple in question will be able to try some bikes out

That Bicycle Bungee… I refer you to the ‘do you fix your punctured inner tubes’ thread for a cheaper alternative and for that reason
