big birthday coming up for the good lady and custom steel is on the wish list. She's after replacing her Dawes Ultra Galaxy with something custom. Not looking at the real pimp end of the market ( IF, Seven etc) but a nice bit of classically constructed 8/953 or similar. We've looked at the usual suspects like Mercian, Roberts etc but are there any suggestions from the STW collective mind that are worth considering?

Ricky Feather?

they look nice but his expertise seems to be more on the fixie side of things. worth an email though. thanks

Roberts, you looked and didn't order; why not
?What does she want that the Ultra Galaxy doesn't already offer? Weight? Finish? Braze ons (unlikely)? Geometry? I'd go with a Roberts 953 (shiny), but that could be construed as pimp-end of the market.

Had this made to measure for my 40th, it's 853 and built by Brian Rourke in Stoke on Trent. Possibly the nicest man in cycling. The second pic was when i'd just built it, it looks a little diffent now.

Dave Yates - had a couple (653, 853) and all ride very nicely. Roberts - but the wait is long.
Google the UK handbuilt show and see what you like.

hadn't looked at rourke yet
You need to go to the shop really, he can show you different frames, his website has the basic prices but the list of options he offers in the shop is huge

Rourke, Bob Jackson and Steve Goff. Goff even has some old tubesets for a very unique build. Never heard of Ricky Feather has he got good credentials?

I really like the looks of that Brian Rourke. I keep thinking for the price of an off the peg Ti frame i could get a custom steel built.

an email to Ricky Feather got an immediate reply, he accidentally got into building fixies and would rather build tourers and audaxers, seems like a nice bloke. final decision is the wife's but got a few more to look at now thanks.
Bob Jackson is in Yorkshire, not sure she'd be up for that

What sort of price are the Feather cycle frames?
Posted 11 months ago # -
around the £1000 starting point

Rourke would my choice for a high-end road frame, lovely looking framesand a good shop to go to. Or for touring specialists, George Longstaff's have a lot of experience.

Thanks mrmichaelwright.

Roberts are nice but from experience very slow - might be worth asking who ever you choose the delivery time

You wouldn't find many finer frames than the latest Woodrup handbuilt beauties:

Another Rourke vote:

I have a Roberts too but I feel they are not as well finishedPosted 11 months ago # -
Those Ricky Feather bikes look very nice

Depends what you are classing as the pimp end of the market, but Spa Cycles now do their own Ti tourer (not custom) which was well recieved in the review in the CTC Cycling mag this month. They also do Sabbath Silk Route tourers with quoted builds at less eye watering levels than I would have thought, and there may be a custom option with those
