    i have a dvd which id like to copy to my computer, its not a film, just a documentary,

    is there anyway i can burn it to my mac?!

    handbrake software will rip the film to your mac (or PC for that matter). It won't remove any copy protection though.

    the handbrake software doesnt seem to be working,
    when i try and open the video file it just plays random bits of sound..

    Handbrake works – try playing the video in VLC, or try a different compression method.

    I personally wouldn't touch a Mac but it's what the OP was asking about.

    Rip the film using handbrake while you have a copy of VLC in your Applications folder. Handbrake will use VLC's decryption libraries to remove the encoding and save it as an mp4 file. This file is readable by QuickTime/VLC etc.
