Not sure whether this belongs in the bike section or not, oh well..

I just rescued my old Chopper from my mum's garage, it was wedged behind a bunch of stuff she just threw out (the man who came to fit a new garage door last month kindly offered to take it off her hands for no charge, luckliy she said no).

It's all in working order apart from needing a new front inner tube and a lot of cleaning and rust removal. So I was going to give it a going over with wire wool to get the rust off, but does anyone know what to do with the chromed mudguards? If I rub them enough to get the muck and pits off the chrome will I go through to the (presumably steel) underneath?

I'm not looking to get it into show room condition for sale, just to smarten it up enough to pootle around on from time to time.

Wood bleach will make all the rust just drop off the chrome…
