Watched the 60th anniversary celebrations last night in Tianniman Square. Scared, in the time honoured tradition of empire building we are looking at a bigger power in the future than any that has been before.
Possibly as cruel as Britain was? Crueler?

If it scares, just try and keep away from it then. Sensible policies for a happier Britain!

Why is China called China anyway, damn silly name for a place, it's like calling your country carpet. Is there a country called Carpet? that'd be scary.
Posted 2 years ago # -
You couldnt call China carpet. Although if there was a hushed up scandal leaked out the redtops would have an easy task creating the headlines I guess..

Napoleon Bonaparte once said of China :
"Here lies a sleeping giant, let him sleep, for when he wakes up, he will shock the world".
Pretty astute observation by the geezer, considering how long ago it was made. How did he have so much insight into the future - did he borrow the time machine in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure or sumfink ?

I think I'd be more worried about the mess if China broke up rather than what's there now. My impression is that they're still fairly inward looking (unfortunate if you hold opposing views to the government). I believe military spending is still significantly less than the US and most likely the EU. Unlike certain certain nations I don't believe they've attacked any other countries recently. I suspect that their military although large is nowhere as advanced as most western nations.
I would have thought that their bigger concerns are development, internal 'policing', trade and expanding their resource base by dealing with countries which the west would not want to, feeding the population and cleaning up the severe environmental damage which they're busy inflicting on themselves.
But it is over 1 billion of the world population. At some point I suspect they will play a bigger role on the world stage the the UK's 60 million.

I believe the Chinese economy is now the 4th largest in the world - they knocked Britain into 5th place a while back. So they already have more clout than Britain in that respect. Indeed many believe that it will be China that pulls the world out of recession.
China hasn't really been inward looking at all, that is part of the reason why it has experienced such uneven development. However, since the global recession this has now dramatically changed. Realising their mistake in their over reliance on exports (which have been buggered by the global recession) they are looking at developing their own internal markets. Adding to that, the fact that the communist party is fully aware that to maintain the general support of the people, they must not continue to ignore those in the rural areas. The last thing they want to do is lose their grip on power.
And I wouldn't underestimate China's technical abilities. Their armed forces might be primitive in many ways, but they have a fair understanding of advanced technology - they have a pretty impressive space programme.
imo

Inward looking?
Is that why they are building an enormous road out of Nairobi to Mombassa at the moment, nothing to do with looking to rip everything they can out of Africa*
But they are looking for resources all over.
*Ok I'm aware that we started this.

No doubt, but since most of it is internally sourced they're getting a lot more for their money than the simple figures would suggest. Look at the size of their military, not what it costs them.
Posted 2 years ago # -
OK, I'll change that to inward looking in terms of security apart from obvious examples. I took the OP to be about military strength from the parades. As far as I know China doesn't have a large proportion of it's military outside of it's borders, unlike us. I'd be surprised if there was major conflict involving China over the next couple of years unless it's on their door-step, like Taiwan. Give it 20 years and then we might be thinking differently!
I agree entirely about the resources but it's no different to what we're doing - not that that makes it acceptable. Libya anyone?
