Agreed, but depends where you are - I've been lucky so far and only used it out of curiosity seeing as it was a gadget I'd bought on eBay!
If you don't look up you won't see the bloated sheep and you won't feel queezy. That's my thought process anyway

Me and my mates have used them loads, never been ill... various places round the world too, so bound to have come across some actual nastys.
Just wander upstream for a bit, looking for obvious nasty deadness. If none spotted, walk back down and drink.
I'm firmly in the why bother camp, and have been for decades. Lovely stream water mmmmmm, no need for this unless you want to fill your bottle out of the Thames.
I would suggest just using the tablets or advice as above. Save weight and forget the brita (you'll get more in the bottle without it too). As far as I am aware Brita filters will not be effective at removing any pathogens present.
Just did a google and got this from the FAQ -
The content of the original BRITA cartridge is an experienced mixture of ion exchange resin and activated carbon, which is particularly suitable for this type of drinking water conditioning.
The ion exchange resin will remove the hardness, and the carbon the taste.
EDIT - after getting into an argument about this sort of thing before - the MCofS advice seems to be the ideal pragmatic approach.

You do realise half the houses in the rural highlands get water straight from burns. Do you think they patrol the burns for corpses, or MTFU and get on with proper highland activities like driving their TE20's, shepherding, and drinking whisky?
Until three years ago we didnt have mains water, got the odd tadpole and bit of frog come through, never got sick.
