I have a chain device on my Lapierre Spicy. It came fitted when new, I took it off initially but I’ve recently put it back on.
The ‘cotton-reel’ type guide wheel which the chain rides over the top of, should that rotate or should it remain fixed ?
Seems that it remains fixed at the moment, wonder if I just have it done up too tight.
What do we think ? Should it be allowed to rotate or should it be fixed ?

    I’ve never seen one fixed.

depends… what is the make of the device? How tight did you do it up?

It should rotate. Did you take it apart? Check you’ve not lost a little washer that goes against the bearing ‘sleeve’ and gives the wheel clearance from the backplate.

Some lower wheel bearings are machined with a protruding step that provides clearance, others use a washer. You may well have over tightened it.

    Thanks all.
Can’t remember the make of the device, but I put it back on as it was set up when it was new. I didn’t tighten the roller myself it was that way when it was new. Anyhow, have loosened the nut a little and now it rotates, although it does by hand at least, not sure whether the friction of the chain is enough to turn it or not.
    Cheers
