Hi, just taken the stem off my road bike and something went ping. It seems that the bike uses an expanding wedge rather than the usual starnut, I'm assuming due to the carbon steerer. But I can't get it out, despite it moving around inside the steerer and me inverting the bike.

Any tips? I have a mallet and a lump hammer, but they don't seem to be helping 🙁

Push it out from underneath? If indeed it is open at the bottom…

depends on the type of wedge, some have a larger allenkey socket that can be loosened to release the wedge.

Levered it out with a screwdriver 🙂 The ping would have been the wedge hitting the top of the fork crown…

Just in case you were tempted to try and avoid the effort in future, don't even think of using a standard star nut as its replacement! I know this is basic stuff, but there was a classic thread on here a few years ago where someone had hammered a standard star-fangled-nut into their carbon steerer… 🙄
