We’re looking for a road bike for my 10yr old niece, she wants to enter triathlons with her mum. Is it possible to get a resonable road bike in her size? Height is 140cm, inside leg 65cm and reach shoulder to palm is 50cm. Xs sizes on the Giant website are 46.5cm, sizing guide says multiply inside leg by 0.665 which gives 43.2 for 65cm. Is there anything out there in kids sizes or would we be better off waiting ’till she grows a bit?

Try Frog bikes – they do a decent road bike for mini people

    Hi Keva, hope you’re good!

I recently bought a lovely Cannondale Synapse, which has v low standover & decent women’s geometry. Mine is a 48cm (which I would say is directly comparable to the XS 46.5cm Giant I had before), so I reckon the tiny 44cm might fit her. Worth a look anyway, as I’ve been seriously impressed with mine – not least because it seems very light compared to other offerings at the same price and they offer quite a few different models to choose from…

    Cheers!

hi MountainMonkey 🙂 yep all good here thanks! hope you’re well too. I’m still enjoying the Lobster, fitted a new chainset a few months ago. we’ll take a look at that Cannodale it sounds like it’s a goodun, if I can find a 44cm that should be about right.

    – plus some other good ones to look at listed above, thanks all!

Yes, Giant Avail comes in XS. I bought one for Teen2 . Just sold it as he’s grown 4″. Great bike – basically a smaller Giant Defy. You will probably have to buy full price and EARLY because they don’t make many XS sized bikes and they sell quickly.

24″ bikes are also available such as a TCR Espoir for less money.

a 650b road bike should be suitable

DT we had a lovely Trek 2200 with 105 groupset. When it was stolen we replaced it with the Avail because I just could not find any decent 650 bikes – everything is now 700c and I think it is a real shame.

Somebody does one in Sky colours on 24″ or possibly 26″ wheels, think that was Frog?

Might be worth trying a Giant of some description.
My eldest borrows my Giant SCR which is supposedly a medium however she’s 14 and 5′

Hey Keva, awesome to hear that the Rock Lobster is still going strong! 🙂

Yep, definitely try out a Canny, if you can – the 44cm is tiny! Our local dealer (in Bath) is excellent, always has a 44cm in stock & is happy to let you test ride them at a drop of a hat, so if you’re ever down this way, be sure to give them a shout – they’re called Cadence (& tell them Juliet sent you!)

Giant also do a (women’s specific) Avail in an XXS which is supposed to be pretty tiny & ride extremely well from what I’ve read. So if you have a Giant dealer nearby, that’s probably worth a look too.. Like others have said, the Frog bikes look great too. Mini MountainMonkey will hopefully getting one of those next year! 🙂

    Cheers and good luck!

Sheesh!!! Doesn’t time fly?! 😀 Enjoy!

I too have been looking at something tiny to put the miles in (tried a Pinnacle Dolomite last year but it was waay too big for me), so as I can’t resist a bit of filth, this time I’ve gone for one of these. 650b too so I’ll no doubt be trying to cram in a pair of super-tackys in the near future 😆

Hey Mamadirt! (This is like the reunion thread!)

That Genesis looks super cool – I v nearly bought one last year when they were white with brown bar tape/saddle (it looks sooo sexy!), but in the end decided it might be a bit small… Please send me an email with some pics (or link to a thread on here), once you’ve put a few miles in as I’d love to know what you think of it.

I’m going more and more over to the darkside these days. I even went out in Lycra with no baggies over the top yesterday! :/

And yep, mini monkey is 5 and a half now (& been riding a ‘big girl’ bike confidently for 18 months already) mirco monkey is 3 and a half (yes the half is important) and not far behind at all – in fact, she’s already faster… just a bit lacking in the skill to back up her enthusiasm! 🙂

Several kids that age on the Derby Sportive. As well as Islas and Frogs there were a couple of Modas and a Kona. Most looked like slick three CX bikes, but seems to be plenty of choice these days.

Decathlon and Carrera do 650b road bikes iirc

Great to hear your little monkeys are little bikers too Juliet :D. Just got in from a first proper ride on the Genesis – climbing with 400mm bars is gonna take a bit of getting used to but it feels pretty damn fast (actually anything would feel fast after my 40+lbs Cove STD 😆 ). It looks tiny and is a pretty short bike (although I still had to chop the seatpost down to get it low enough) – feels a lot more confidence-inspiring than the Pinnacle for die-hard MTBers like me – I don’t think I’ll be binning my flat pedals or helmet peak anytime soon 😉
