As above – is a BMX BB shell the same dia. and thread as a modern MTB?

No, very few bmxes were made with “euro” (i.e. mtb) bb shells, and probably none currently*.

    *Except race frames

euro=mtb, increacingly common, cartridge type BB’s
ammerican = older design, bug cups pressed into the frame, bearings into the cup, axel slides through bearings and is spaced out like a race face X-type axel.
spannish= ammerican bb, but no cups as the bearings sit directly in the frame.
