I've still got a knackered old pair of smokes 'n darts on a hardtail. They were a class apart when new, far more robust than wildgrippers etc but I reckon modern designs would outdo them in cornering grip and drag. Still, it would be interesting to see how the recently relaunched SnD combo would compare with modern ramped designs.

Another vote for Ground Controls here.
Loaned a bike to my mate a year or so ago, and it still had the original GC attached. Must have been nigh on 20 years old and had furry sidewalls due to all the threads withering. Still held air and had plenty of tread left.

I've been running HR front Mich 16 rear for years now & they're the best grip I've ever riden.

+1 for IRC Mythos. Front + rear specific. Utterly awesome tyre..
Everyone knows that Onza Octopus was for slickrock! Honestly... some people.

+1 Smoke/Dart, so good that not only do I still use them, but they are still available, in folding with fancy modern dual-density rubber.

schwalbe ice spiker pro, 700grams each of 361 carbide spike enhanced grip :D. You wont find a tyre that gives that much grip for that much weight.
Smoke and Darts were great back in the day, but super tacky HR's and Minions are better. Wet screams are sweet also.

Mimo's all day long... quick, light and you can really stuff them in to corners!

I'd second the ice spiker as the ultimate grip absolutely anything tyre.
Plus smoke and dart, not the best now, but still the best.
And conti xc's, not the best general purpose tyre, but fantastic at what it does.
Oh, mud mads, great tyres that seem to last forever.Posted 2 years ago #
