got a guy in work having a month paternity leave, want to set it up so he can use his work pc at home via his laptop.
i know its going to be slow but better than nothing.
its only a temp solution.
gotomypc seems the best as it has a months trial, any other i should look at or are they pretty much the same?

I've used logmein.com before - they have a free version but i think it's quite basic as to what it allows you to do.
You have to pay if you want all the bells and whistles. Seems to work OK though - not sure how it differs to gotomypc
I also use Logmein.com on my mac. Quite handy remotely using my macbook pro via me iphone.
Remote Desktop works fine. I use if for accessing servers, and it's part of Windows.
I use logmein, free is good enough but the paid version does a few extra bit and bobs.

without getting too technical in reagrds to Windows remote desktop. do you need to set up static ips etc?
i dont want to go messing with the server. (if its not broke etc etc :wink:)
you can use a dynamic dns service like dyndns to give you a portable hostname. Most routers support these services now so they can automatically update dyndns when your IP changes.
there is realVNC to consider too, works really well.
I don't know what the free edition is like, but you can log in using any web browser (java based) or using the viewer program
if you can connect via vpn to the server then you'd only need to enable remote desktop on the pc being used or if you could change settings on the router to forward the remote desktop port (3389 i think ) to the pc being used
I use Remote Desktop over a VPN connection to access my work PC (a normal desktop) when I work from home. It's perfectly usable.
VPNs can be a pain in the ass to maintain. If it's only a temp solution, then logmein, gotomypc etc will do the job just fine.
