Beetroot juice - anyone tried it and did have an effect?

I see it's making headlines again, reducing blood pressure and making cyclists into endurance athletes!

Seriously, apart from turning your urine pink and your rear end deposits red, what has beetroot ever done for you?

Other than that? Nothing.

Drank around a litre in the hours before a race last year. Made my urine a bit of a pale purple colour but otherwise had no discernable effect.
On the other hand I don't know how I would have ridden without it, not a scientific test.
