I fitted Avid BB7 mechanical disc brakes to my rockhopper. After about 50 - 70 miles, one of the front pads (outer) looks like it only has 1-2mm at most before it gets to the copper coloured metal housing. The inner has a wee bit more but not a lot.
Can anyone tell me if this is normal, ie to have to replace pads after lot less than 100 miles ?

It can be in the winter months. Sound like the sintered pads so should be better than if you'd had organics. Did you bed them in?
How are you finding the BB7s? Was just wondering whether to get a set. Pad changes okay to do (Juicys are a mare to change)?
I like my BB7s and in some ways prefer them to my Juicy 5s. I'll qualify that. They are powerful enough, though not as outright power of Juicys. What I like is being able to accurately adjust the cable tension so that the bite occurs exactly where you want it. Juicys are good and quite good modulation wise. I just feel that for me the bite is too soon in the lever travel.
Pad change-only done it once myself and did find it a fiddle at first and didn't get it right first time. As same pad system as Juicys though the change will be no different. I now feel it best to take the caliper off the bike to change the pads.
nuke - I do like them and found them fairly straightforward to install - I'm old fashioned and wasn't keen on hydraulics when I tried them. Only things which come to mind - I recall the one of the torque settings in the instructions wasn't correct. Also, the head of one of the screws which holds the disc to the wheel sheared - had to drill it out and buy new bolts.
