ok, i can't resist! some of rev's releases, perhaps (farside, sensefield, perhaps civ) but other than dag nasty i wouldn't have said that anything at all on dischord could be considered 'pop punk'.

    Northwind, Mmm I'd say early 30's? 🙂

To hell with it all just listen to the refused 🙂

Some randon not on here stuff:

    Attack Attack!
    Contagious
Ugly Kid Joe (how did you miss this so far STW)
    Sum41

I'm sure there's others but it's late hot and I'm shattered.

Rival Schools fans, there are still rumours of a MUCH anticipated 2nd album, their first remains a top 10 album for me ever.

I struggle with that aswell, but I'm not sure if the term Punk wasn't used in the mid sixties with a certain west coast garage sound. If it was, I don't think us old 70s/80s Punks should be so keen to dismiss everything else described as Punk. I have the same issues with the reuse of the term R&B.

    oh yeah

FWIW I grew up listening to SLF, Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Undertones & various other "new wave" bits & bobs.
Then I joined my second band & we did some Damned/Clash/DK covers, so I got into that stuff too.

Then we discovered Killing Joke, The Southern Death Cult, Bauhaus, XMal Deutschland, The Sisters Of Mercy, Theatre Of Hate, Sex Gang Children, Skeletal Family, Spear Of Destiny (who my very latest band supported only this weekend!) and so on…

but "punk" to me means the summer of 77, even though I was only 12

Pop punk – a big wTF???

There's been loads of bands with jangly guitars and attitude, but not "punk" – I think we used to call them "indie" 🙄

My first thought at the term Pop Punk was Carter USM, but the "pop" part doesn't do just to their cutting social commentaries…

power pop! thats a better name for it . just thought that up. clever arent i 🙂 (unless its already been thought of 🙂 just leave punk out of it 🙂

carter USM. thats a good call. oh and +1 for the R&B thing.

I asked this question a few weeks ago at my local record store, though I used "California skate punk" as my genre tags. I had a good listen to many suggestions from their punk experts, many of which are mentioned above. Much good stuff can be found on the Fat Wreck Chords label.
As an intro/taster, I went home with Blink182 Dude Ranch, and The Living End

WTF does it matter WHAT IT'S CALLED!!??? You know what sort of thing the OP is asking for and it's not Iron Maiden, Rammstein, Pistols etc etc.
There's just no such thing as a simple request on STW, is there?

Power Pop is a title that I saw the Descendents used a while back. Great title, well re-invented @sadexpunk.

WTF does it matter WHAT IT'S CALLED!!???

Of course it matters what it's called. We can judge everything about you by, not just what musical genre you listen to but also, how you are able to introduce that genre into conversation. Get it wrong and you could be outcast. Only through impecable research and introduction of über-niche bands into your social circles can you begin to lift yourself out.

And The Riverdales – Tarantula just came out this year and is a perfect pop-punk record. Very Ramones (but you can't buy a Riverdales T-shirt at TopShop).

Ditto, anything on Fat, the quintesential pop punk label.

I spent my formative years going round the country in stinky vans as a hanger on of various bands that would have a ska break in the middle of most of their tunes and thought Nofx and the screeching weasles were the greatest bands ever.

    Leatherface are worth a look.
I've still got a Vanilla Pod T soemwhere (what's wrong with them live BTW?)

not just what musical genre you listen to… blah blah blah

So you only listen to one genre?

'Power Pop' could be… Bonnie Tyler, The Vapours, The Sweet, The Knack, Weezer anything! Rubbish categorisation!

Pop Punk is bloody obvious. Its even got a Wikipedia entry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pop_punk !

(BTW, It's not what I listen to, since Green Day went stadium rock, so I'm not defending it, just the OPs use of the phrase. OK?!)

Ah. One of my all time favourite bands. They were always going to burn out pretty fast, but I saw them 3 times before they did. Wonderful!

Of the other bands I've seen, Snuff come right at the top with the best gig I ever went to. 🙂

How any time sigs do Weezer manage to nudge in to their challenging edgy tunes then?

If you want Math stuff check out Sweep the leg Johnny or faraquet.

😳 I thought Math Rock was just a label like geek rock, which i guess is more apt for Weezer. I will definitely check those bands you mentioned out though.

No worries mate, it's a geeky minefield out there.

Math rock as a term comes from the nerdy time sigs used and the consequent jerky polyrythmic music that ensues. It mainly came out of the Chicago free jazz infl post harcore bands but you can see ellements of it in Firehose and the minutemen as well as parts of Sonic Youth, Buthole Surfers and 'June of 44'.

Just been tagging some stuff to go on my iPod and noticed these which may fit the "punky in a poppy way" bill:

Jimmy Eat World (The Middle – top tune)
    American Hi-Fi
    Idlewild
