Can you get any bikes in the back or is it best to get a rack?

Depends if its got automatic choke or not.

old-shape A3 1.8T here. managed to fit two DH bikes (wheels off, saddle out) and one XC bike (wheels off, saddle down) in the back last weekend with the seats down, plus passenger & race/camping/tool kit for two (including dirtworker). don’t bother with a rack – almost anything (within reason) can fit in the back of an A3 🙂

Had an old shape S3 (2001). Boot floor is quite high due to 4wd gubbins, but still easy enough to get a couple of bike in with wheels off.
