    Is it possible to pay money up front to lower the payments? Now thinking about a brompton but wife is none too impressed with the price.

    In theory no. But in practice some shops are prepared to bend the rules. In theory you can’t buy an on-sale bike via the scheme, but I have with a £70 supplement to fund the 12% charge the bike shop gets.
