Facilities are a bit basic here at MTG Towers. I'm not on mains water and have to carry my water in in 25 litre containers.
During the winter I do as much cooking as possible on the log burner.
After boiling the potatoes for dinner, I save the hot water and use it for washing up after I've eaten.
Seems like common sense to me, MuddyPuddle thinks I should boil fresh water to wash up.
Am I being unreasonable ?

Would you lick one of your unwashed spuds?
Posted 1 year ago # -
Gotta love the times where you can have internet, but not water.
Posted 1 year ago # -
I buy the ready washed and bagged ones, 'cos I'm posh.
I wouldn't do it if the water was all muddy.Posted 1 year ago # -

you must have well starched teatowels.
Posted 1 year ago # -
Surely it makes your dishes all starchy?
Posted 1 year ago # -
Depends. If you've cut the spuds, then there'll be a lot of starch in the water, so you'll end up with crusty plates.
SOP for washing up on offshore yacht races is to use seawater, by the way - never did me or the rest of the crews any harm.

bent-udder - I assume you hook the used tampons and condoms out before using it?

I love this forum: There are times when even the title of the topic makes me burst out laughing. Dangerous when you are at work

No hygiene issues IMO but I'd rinse the starch off the plates.
Posted 1 year ago # -
Seems a shame to waste it - heat it back up for some tea?
Posted 1 year ago # -
Surely everyone uses potato water to make proper gravy?
IanPosted 1 year ago # -
I usually fill the saucepan to boil it with the spuds in, then add another saucepan full of cold water to the washing up bowl to get the temperature right, so the starch is pretty well diluted by then. I don't notice it anyway.

If your not unwell then why not, however starchy potato water sounds like ideal living conditions for bacteria .

Everybody at some point in their life ends up swallowing some dirty tatty water.

Can I just be the first to clarify that not all vegans are living as medieval peasants.

get one of these;

they're 40 litres and the extra 15 litres will allow you to wash up with clean water.

I think you should wash up whatever way you want, with whatever fluid you choose. Mains water or not, are you not an Englishman and is it not your castle?

HTS - you are a bad man

I'm with muddypuddle here.
Anyway, men always wash up in water that's luke warm. Imo. it should be so hot that you have to wear marigolds.
Also men always leave bits on the plate and never rinse - fussy me, never

I do like MTG's style here.
No running water but he does have internet and buys pre-washed potatoes and then cooks them on a log burner.
It's like a tourettes version of the good life.

Bunnyhop - you have just described the washing up technique of Mrs W2K to a tee. I'm the one with washing up OCD in our house

I am even more inclined to think that MTG is in fact in a bunker somewhere with his vegan brotherhood planning a revolution.
Burger Kings, and other meat based royalty, will be the first against the wall.

Other way around in our house.
Although the bit about water temperature is spot on.
Don't like marigolds, give me sweaty hands and a dirty boy smell.

I always wondered what happened to Stig of the Dump...

I know what you mean, as I use mine for washing the bikes, however they are not the same ones used for the washing up, oh hang on, I have different marigolds for cleaning the loo too.Lol @ Samuri.

make nicer food then and they'll eat it all.

You've not met me... Mrs. z1ppy complains that scalding hot water is not necessary to clean the washing up when you using an anti-baterial washing up liquid.. I disagree but as the new kitchen has a dishwash, it doesn't matter anymore
