Does anyone know if an Alfine hub uses the same cable pull as any other Shimano 8 speed sti?

…and do they have a built in cable outer stop so you don't need a braze-on on the frame? is that what that little arm is?

Alfine / Nexus has a different cable pull – you need the proper shifter.

The little arm does act as a cable stop – I ran full length gear cable outer when fitted to my ss frame and just used heatshrink sleeve to run it alongside the brake cable outer.

There are a number of axle anti-turn wahsers available – you can swap them about to get the cable to exit in different directions (depends on your dropout – I ended up swapping lh and rh washers to run cable tidily up the chainstay)
