What’s Aer Lingus like for transatlantic?

Dunno, but they run the Virgin Wee Red service between EDI and LHR and that is pretty good.
Do they offer the US customs clearance thing in Ireland?

Hmm.. travelling from Dublin is over £900 less than from any of our other airports.

That would leave us plenty of cash to get to Dublin from Cardiff.. but is this a fool’s errand I wonder? Worried that it would end up a nightmare trip for us with 2 small kids.

Yes, check the prices from Bristol via Dublin. They advertise customs pre-clearance on the Brs airport website

I fly them often over to Ireland and back, plus a trip to Sweden this week. Their service and planes are always excellent – can’t see why their long-haul flights would be any different.
