  • Aaaaaagh… Halfords MTB ads on TDF coverage.

Is it just me of is the Halfords ident (that’s media talk for those 10 second Tv sponsorship ads between the show and the real ads) with the MTB just wrong?

The guy locks the back up in every corner, he should rail those corners, dreadful notchy style. No flow, and poor trail manners.

I imagine the production team who probably know nothing about bikes thought is would look “wicked”.

I know its not a big deal but its like nails scraping down a blackboard for me…. Really aggravates something inside me… possibly my colon, possibly my trail etiquette gland.

Singlespeeds and 29ers do the same for me.

It will be the production team. The Urban one was filmed around Brindley Place in Brum, my work mate is one of the riders and was filmed by steve behr iirc. All the folks in the adverts work for us and can ride

I agree Charlie. Skidiots, as my 10 year pointed out.

TDF sponsor AD's must be fantastic for Halfords, but I can't believe the skinflints are only have "one" bike competition for all there coverage…

It's an ITV comp not Halfords, Halfords just supply the prize

I dont like the one with the 3 roadies either, it just looks so fake. The riders look so uncomfortable and awkward. Horrible kit as well.

yeah, the skidding provokes howls from me and #1 son every time.
still, the advertising works, I'll definitely be buying my next bike from bike hut oh yes 🙄

The point of advertising is to get your name or message across – no point in an advert if you get to the end and don't know who is being advertised.

Halfords are obviously doing it fairly well if you are all talking about them on an internet forum?

Grumpy Scottish old before there time folks that comment on bikes they've never ridden do the same for me. 😉

As op says,I think it ecourages poor riding,a skidding bike is the last thing a trail builder would want on a new forest trail! 😥

Having said that, any cycling ads have to be a posetive thing for cycling longer term, and its a good thing a company like this are showing an interest in promoting the sport in the first place. 😉

at least Halfords are being true to themselves
    being clueless about cycling 😈

Another Halfords thought… The UK Tour Series Team…

Its good to see Halfords put some money into sponsoring a team in the “Tour Series” on ITV4 on the weeks leading up to the TDF. I am not saying it’s misleading, false advertising or anything like that. I just think the race team should use the same Saturday boy part time bike mechanics that their customers get.

They were pants adverts and extremely annoying but it's fairly significent that a "bikeshop" is advertising nationally. (Whatever people think of bikehut/halfords)

Is this the first tv bike advert since the Raleigh Activator?

Ok… its fair to say that seeing adverts for bikes on telly is good for cycling.

BUT, these are idents around TDF coverage, which is largely watched by cyclists. This is not halfords targeting non cyclists, trying to get them out of their cars and on to bikes.

Sky+ it and whizz thro all the ads….the halfords one is useful coz you know where to stop it to carry on watching

Anyone watching the TDF, (including kids) is being subjected to too much mtb skidding during the ad breaks imo.

For walkers, landowners, trail builders, local considerate mtb riders it's setting a shocking example!

Stick images on the TV like that so often and it'll become considered an acceptable norm…

The ad has rubbed me up the wrong way too Charlie and I'm pleased to read others share that opinion.

Evans are advertising too during the British Eurosport TDF breaks. I quite like their ads

Yup, bally annoying for me, too. Looking forward to repairing a load of skid damage on all the trails as a result of that crumby ad. Thanks, Halfords!

I honestly can't tell who is taking the mickey on this thread and who is for real.

    Chapeau Chalkyslide either way. 🙂

OK so they are trying to target cyclists.

They use poor riders poorly caught on film. Which tends to annoy most roadies and mountain bikers. Evidently.

If Ford where to show adverts for Fiestas doing donut in a Tesco carpark when the F1 was on, there would be an outcry.

I think the production company need to re-think their idea completely.

Bugs the hell out of me as it has done since it started last year or the year before.

There are a lot of cyclist who watch this yes, but the TDF is probably the ONLY cycle race that non-cyclists (or at least cyclists who arnt soooo keen they frequent cycling forums 🙄 ) watch. I was at a party this weekend and once someone found out i was a keen cyclist all they talked to me about was the tour (same at work), its very suprising how many people take a casual interest in the TDF and that is exactly why Halfords advertise there.

This is not halfords targeting non cyclists, trying to get them out of their cars and on to bikes

They are DEFFINATLEY hoping non-cyclists will pickup on the ad, just as they will be hoping keen-cyclists will see the ad and come into the store to look at the bikes shown. Of course they are not doing it for the reason of getting people out of cars and on to bikes, thats obvious purely from the fact that they are a (big) business not a nice little eco-shop like you Charlie 😆 They are doing it just to make more money.

I find it pretty weird that so much money has been spent on filming such rubbish riding. FFS my two girls know that's not how you ride.

I just realised that I've missed watching these ads entirely – ah, the beauty of a V+ box and FFing all the ads 🙂

I might have to make an exception and watch them tonight…

Has anyone got a youtube link to the ads, would love to join in the righteous indignation too but haven't seen it yet…

Oh hang on a minute this is a forum isnt it…

Bloody idiots, I've never been so disgusted with a TV advert in all my life, irrisponsible nobbers, they'll bring the downfall of biking you mark my words. Bad example will make car drivers want to run us all down etc etc

    😉

I'm glad not to be alone having spotted the skidding

I don't find it a major big deal. I didn't start my own thread as I wondered if others had noticed

I was watching it and thinking it shows the crippled state of the cycling business if the only company with enough money to fund the idents was Halfrauds… why were specialized or trek not biting at the bit to get all the well healed tdf armchair buffs down to buy their commuter bling…. even the abc could have tried to take the opportunity to expose the great unwashed to their local bike shop where you might even find a specialist rather than mail order over the internet

I'm just pleased it was not Nissan Ford or Saab who got the chance to sell their cyclist killing devices in that short spot

    Charlie,
I'm totally with you! I just thought i was an old fart who shouts at the telly… oh, I am… anyway the 'rider' in the ad totally winds me up. However, I can just see the director asking him to skid because it will look more 'dramatic' for the punters i.e. not the people on this forum.
