I know on my road-bike a get a smidge of overlap.
On a mtb the top tube may be a little longer than on a road bike and the angles a little more laid back, but the wheel and tyre on a 29er is bigger than a 700x23.
Do 29ers suffer from toe overlap, consider also i have size 11 feet? so the small footed saying they don't experience it isn't really going to be helpful.

Demo'd a 29er and put about 7-8 hours in on it over 3 days.
I experienced toe overlap exactly once, but if you have your feet in the right position (i.e. opposite side down) it isn't a problem.
However I did experience a bit of pedal strike...

Size 12 feet here - 19 inch Gary Fisher 29er - no toe overlap so far.
I do wear SPDs though, so this may help.

It's just the toeclips though; with flats or SPDs, I don't think it's be an issue. Plus, the bike was designed for drop bars, so might have a slightly shorter top tube than a 'normal' 29er.
It's a fixie too, so I don't get an much choice over where my feet are when turning tight corners, but it's never really been a problem.

None here. 45 spd shoe, medium niner, 2.25 rubber.
If it happens, your feet will explode along with the wheels anyway.
Taller than you and size 11 - 12 feet here - no overlap on a ScandAL.
I did notice it once ever so slightly with my Specialized Carve 29er with size 11 feet at very slow speed negotiating my garden path with flats, since I used spds then never.
