That might actually be a reference to the English and not the British, Johnny Foreigner does know the difference.

    Inselaffen,
Ex-pat colleagues in Munich even adopted that to refer to their ex-countrymen. Fits perfectly.

trailmonkey – that’s Rangers fans. They don’t count.

Anyway – using English to sum up British is only xenophobic if you think there’s something wrong with being British.

hehe, like the wiki definition of that.

The actual meaning behind it refers to the German (and other European countries) stereotypical image of the English as heavy drinking, violent, criminalistic and yobbish. These characteristics of the English are regularly witnessed by Europeans when visiting the UK, while on vacation elsewhere or at soccer matches, where many Europeans have been victim to the internationally infamous English cultural pastime of hooliganism.

It may be a concidence but I generally get on much better with people who describe themselves as English, Scottish and Welsh rather than people who say their British.

Do you meet many people who describe themselves as English, Scottish and Welsh ?

That really saddens me that any British person would even think that.

Because IME it’s not true, for a start.

Do you meet many people who describe themselves as English, Scottish and Welsh ?

Most people do don’t they? I’m English, and I work with a LOT of Welsh people. I like the Welsh, they’re great. As are the Scots and the Irish. 🙂 Although, together, we’re all British. Fabulous! 🙂
