In my job I regularly visit people in their homes. The ones who seem proudest of being British are the ones who were born overseas.

We’ve had some French guests over and they were amazed at the fruit and veg with “honesty boxes” outside peoples’s houses.
Also, they were very impressed with children’s toys in play areas inside churches.
Both things they say would be stolen in France. Sweeping statement and surely exaggerated but made me feel a little proud nonetheless.

They see us as very honest and trusting, even amid the rioting/looting!

I like the Welsh, they’re great. As are the Scots and the Irish. Although, together, we’re all British

True is this.

Media attention focuses on the negative, creating a false perception of reality. So much for ‘balanced’ reporting.

Nice people doing positive things isn’t newsworthy so we generally never hear about it.

The media has lot to answer for in my opinion. There’s nothing responsible about constantly reporting only the bad news.

A lot of my fellow countrymen make a point of saying that they are scottish when they are abroad. The conversation tends to go something like this:

“where are you from?”
“Glasgow”
“Ah Englishman”
“No! Scottish!”
“Ah Scottishman, very very friendly”

It is amazing to see how people treat you differently when they think you are english and then you tell them you’re scottish.

It’s great being scottish.
