  • 7 Days to get to Windermere in a campervan from London…what routes ?

The summer holidays are getting nearer and we have a cottage booked for the 2nd week of August (9th) in the Lakes.

The plan is to leave London on Friday 1st Aug and slowly make way up north, the original plan of Scotland has been binned due to the massive distance.

Ideally would like to have a few one night stops and a few 2 night stops in the campervan.

Looking for rural/coast/campsites/National Trust things ??

East coast ? West coast ?

    Hit me with thoughts…

Head West – Mendips, Long Mynd, South Wales, North Wales, Lake District ? You could also do three National Parks, Pembrokeshire, Snowdonia, Lake District (and hike up highest peak in each ?)

Just use the M1, it’ll be slow all right 🙂

    With bike?
What about heading to stone henge first then head into Wales. If sans bike head up the West coast to Anglesea. If with bike a tour of the trail centres of course.

M1 then M6 – get there in one day. Spend the rest of your 7 days in the lake district- it’s much nicer than anything in between.

Assuming your not linking biking spots……

I’d head West and aim to tour the Wales coast. Good coastal stops would be

Gower Peninsula (that also has biking)

Area round st Davids in Pembrokeshire. maybe camp at Newgale or the just outside st Davids. Do a rib trip, bookable in St Davids

Then maybe head upto the LLyn Peninsula taking in same castles on the way

Obliviously Snowdonia could sub for the Llyn

@unfitgeezer – further to above if you’ve never been to Pembrokeshire I would highly recommend it (The M4 to Wales on a Friday night will be busy). Some great beaches especially those you have to walk to which will be deserted (we parked at NT Stackpole looked around the old gardens/lake and then walked the coast), some surf spots with fellow camper vans (out West past Castlemartin), pretty fishing towns (eg Tenby), good food in Narbath. As above the Gower is lovely too (narrow roads and lots of campervans !) eg Worms Head/Rhosilli. It’s quite a short drive from the Gower to Glencorrig/Afan trails if you want trail centre although that’s a crime with all the natural beauty.

You can then head North and perhaps stop at Coed-y-Brenin/Cadr-Idris, Snowden and the coast around Porthmadogh. Thereafter you have the hop into the Lake District which itself is worth of a few stops as its a big area and you can spend some time away from the Keswick/Ambleside tourist hotspots.
