Planning to add a 10 speed cassette to my SS for big hilly rides and just wondered if anyone has ever done 3×1 – must be niche enough for lots of people on here to have done it 😉

Front mechs dont work as smoothly as rear mechs and you still need to tension the chain.

But common sence or rational behaviour never stood in the way of the persuit of nichness.

    s,

Gear spread similar to a 3-speed Sturmey Archer but needs a big tensioner (read rear mech sans shifter) and 3 chainrings with shifter, cable and mech.
All that weight and mud traps….not a chance.

Surely the chain would be too loose when in the granny ring?

On this theme, has anyone tried a Hammerschmidt 2×1 drivetrain? That would seem to make some sort of sense. I’m not going to try it, just curious.

    Its not mine sadly.

    I tried 2 x 1 sans shifter using a rohloff tensioner.

Worked fine. Large ring for road work, smaller for offroad.

The rohloff has a ‘gurt big spring so keeping tension wasn’t an issue and seemed to shed mud etc pretty well.
