Converting an old Merlin Malt Ltd Edition alu frame(circa 2001)into a pseudo road bike for general keeping fit and going out on the roads with mates with road bikes…nothing fancy – 1" slicks, old 5 arm XT chainset with a 48t outer, second hand carbon rigid forks. Most from spares box…

Trouble is that it has a weird seatpost size – 27.4mm. Bought a cheap 27.2mm FSA carbon one from On-One which I now need to fit. Reckon a cut down alu beer can wrapped round the post should work.

    Anyone done similar?

I've got a couple of bikes which have been over reamed meaning that a seatpost 0.2mm works better than the stated size. Both have alu can shim which have worked perfectly.

Yep, I've also used electrical tape wrapped around the seat tube and currently have a long shim made of part of a plastic milk carton in my current bike until my new seatpost arrives.
