Sounds like a good event! Although you say that despite their best effort it was dominated by the xc types in the xc race, yet it was an xc racer who was quickest in the DH... So your man could've been within 2 mins of Craigy if he could descend as well

Seeing as it was a wet sunday afternoon I had chance to write up a race report from last weekends brilliant Weekender.

http://thisisheffield.co.uk/2011/singletrack-weekender/

Pinched a load of photos and linked in Jon and Dom's great video.

Had an amazing weekend will definitely be back next year.

Handsomedog, Todmorden is about the same distance as well but has a large hill as well. If you're not bringing a bike (?) then the X43 bus to Rawtenstall is you best bet.

Does anyone know if a decent way to get to the Quarries by public transport from Manchester?

Looking at googlemaps the nearest station is Rochdale which is a reasonable step.

You're doing it all wrong then Si. No need to stop riding just because there's another bundle of annoyance in the house. Just lay down the law and come out with us every Wednesday night. It's post kiddie bedtime and it soon becomes the norm and is just accepted as being how things are. Or is my wife just extra nice/tolerant?
Probably staying local in Wharncliffe tonight if you're interested.

Si, you should go for vet category. You'll be even more past it next year so this is your last chance to shine before you properly let yourself go.

I'm thinking of going vet because it might be my only chance ever of a podium finish unless everyone else that beat me last year is also about to turn 40

We need some more helping hands for the imminent Shimano Singletrack Classic Weekender event on July 9 - 10.

Whether you can marshal one day or both days, or even if you can spare a couple of hours doing bits and bobs for the cause, then we want to hear from you.

Even though being a marshal at the Weekender is an amazingly awesome experience in its own right, we still thought we’d dangle a bit of a carrot in front of you in the form of FREE STUFF.

One lucky marshal will be plucked at random to receive Singletrack schwag worth over SIXTY QUID!

http://www.singletrackworld.com/2011/06/be-a-weekender-marshal-and-win-stuff/

You’ll also win our endless love too but that’s the sort of thing that you can’t put a price on.

If you can help out drop us an email via weekender@singletrackworld.com or call the office on 01706 8113344.

Poppies do takeaway as well as eat in so you could phone them up order some food roll down the hill on oyur bike and collect and be back up in the quarry within half an hour. But then again they are licenced so a couple of beers might take a bit longer.

Last year on ST4 with Minion rear, Ardent front and Revs fork. Felt I wanted a bit more travel here and there but was pretty good for XC.. that said it was still 30lbs for various reasons.

This year I dont have the ST4.. have Nomad C, so thats what I'm going to ride. Have a Reverb post, Front Tyre - Ardent LUST (if its dry), Minion if wetter, rear crossmark LUST. Has lyrics on at present but toying with idea of sticking 150mm revs on to bring it more XCey as I still think its all about the XC if you want a good overall result.

Ben and I finalised the xc course today 6.01km 170m altitude gain and loss. Some rocks, some singletrack, some berms, some grass. Took us 1hr 12min to walk one lap! We did stop to look at stuff along the way I reckon a 17min lap?

With less than three weeks to go until this year’s Shimano Singletrack Classic Weekender talk is turning to what kit to use for the event. If you’re just coming along to have-a-go and have a laugh then just bring your regular bike and get on with it. If you’re actually bothered about how you perform at the Weekender and have the desire to equip yourself well then have a look at some comments from previous years’ competitors about what worked and what didn’t…

http://www.singletrackworld.com/2011/06/shimano-singletrack-classic-weekender-what-bike-for/

What about you? What are you bringing? What do you think we work well at the Weekender? Leave a comment below.

We'll let you know how that pans out early next week.

Just to add, I reckon that if I could choose any bike at all I would go for a SC Tallboy with Reverb and something like an Ikon or maybe Ardent/Crossmark tyre.

Would be rayt fast that.

Might take a trip over with the 29er before the event to see how it fairs.

First year - SC Nomad with Super Tacky DH High Rollers. Idea was I wanted to enjoy the DH without puncturing but the tyres actually made me cry at the end of the XC, they were hell.

Second year - Same Nomad but with tubeless Minion EXO tyres. Much faster on both the DH and the XC but as alluded to up there I did get a rather frustrating pinch puncture about 20 seconds into the DH ruining my run. Also caused issues in the XC.

The Nomad is really too big a bike for the event. Too much travel really and a bit too slack. Obviously it is very confidence inspiring in the DH and performed fine in the trials but it is a bit too much for the XC. The main problem there though is me as I am just not fit enough and too heavy.

This year I was planning on using the Nomad again but my new 29er might still be in with a shout yet. Either way, I'll be using tubeless tyres again and will have a Reverb seatpost. Nomad is now 1x10 which might make it a big of a fight depending on the climbs but we'll see.
