Tuesday Treats 26: CRG Moto

by 3

It’s that time again. Your once a week (doctor’s approved) dosage of product fancy from Singletrack’s Premier Dealers, stockists and advertisers.

Tuesday Treats gives you a quality serving of independent bike retailing and a chance to win big in this week’s special prize draw.

This week, we introduce CRG Moto:

Fully stocked!

Danny Pearson picks up the story. ‘When Singletrack started chasing us for our Tuesday Treats slot, CRG Moto were getting primed and ready for The Bike Place show. Ideas began to form of amazing night riding photography to show off our Gloworm light range in action…

Shooting night lights. A job for the professionals!

It’s now clear why we don’t make a living from photography!’

Many Singletrack readers won’t know that our background has actually been formed in the motorcycle industry. Interestingly, while Guy Martin recently finished well at the Strathpuffer, we’re actually more used to supplying riders like Guy and John McGuinness with (winning) parts for the TT.

As a mountain biker who preferred riding in the dark to daylight, I’d been looking for the holy grail of bike lights. I then came across New Zealand company, Gloworm Performance Products, founded by mountain bike and outdoor enthusiast, Bruce Davey. Gloworm’s lights are designed and developed by NZ riders with a philosophy to deliver the performance and quality of premium light brands but at an accessible price.

What’s your current best-selling/hottest product?

The Gloworm X2 might have only been available for a short time but the X2 has quickly developed a loyal following. Many X2 sales are still by recommendation and word of mouth, the best type of recommendation! The Gloworm X2 with 2 Cree XM-L U2 emitters putting out a genuine 1200 lumens and improved optics for more punch and increased throw from its compact 90g head unit.

The X2 is revolutionary in introducing features not normally seen at its price point.  A very real world example of this is that we recently ran at X2 and battery pack underwater for 9 hours non-stop at The Bike Place show, with no ill effect. British weather we fear not.

What about staff rides and bike kit? Where do you guys get off and with what?

Living in County Durham is awesome for mountain bike and road riding. Only 10 minutes to Hamsterley and under 60 minutes to the Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors and the Lakes. We are often found on the natural trails above Blanchland and Edmundbyers in County Durham. There is a bit of everything – singletrack, rocks, bogs and some properly tough climbs.

Kit-wise, apart Gloworm lights, we love Rubber Queen black chilli tyres. How does a tyre that wears so well have so much grip? Fender Benders or Neoguards are fitted at the moment, it’s always hotly debated as to which is best. ESI Grips for all day comfort and on a very personal note, I love my Nicolai Helius CC, being the perfect companion for riding everything from local XC to natural technical trails.

Is there a forthcoming event you think our readers should know about?

CRGMoto are currently developing into other areas of the bicycle market, so expect to see a new range of flat pedals arriving soon and other products to follow. We’ll be very busy in 2013 as Gloworm have released a new light called unsurprisingly, the X1. The Gloworm X1 is the first bicycle light to use Cree’s XML U3 emitter resulting in a genuine 850 lumens from its tiny light head.

Small, neat, bright... pick all three

The X1 is breaking new ground with its custom optics. Usually you need a large reflector to deliver a tight beam with great throw but the X1 has achieved this from light head that is only 32mm wide and weighs less than 60g. And it’s supplied with 3 different optics giving a choice of Spot, Flood and Superspot beams!

Gloworm have big plans for 2013 so expect to see more new products over the coming months including a range of demo events, starting at Dalby Bike Barn, who are running Gloworm demo nights over the next two Tuesday nights (12th and 19th February). They will have several Gloworm X2s and Gloworm X1s available for demo. Contact Sophie Carter at Dalby Bike Barn for more details.

They have a genuine ‘by riders for riders company ethos’ which we share. It really doesn’t feel like work, it’s all about making riding at night more fun and affordable.

Tell us something about your shop/staff that no-one knows…

Leaving my pads at home (doh!) resulted in a degloved knee at Glentress last Halloween which has stopped me riding recently. (We just couldn’t show the pictures! Ed.) On Saturday had my the first ride since the injury, it hurt like hell but it great to be on a bike. Need to work hard now to recover my fitness for the off-road C2C planned for May.

We are also currently running a special promotion aimed at supporting riders who are competing in night racing events in 2013. Tell us the event that you’ve entered and we’ll provide a discount code.
