The end of August used to mean that eyes would turn towards a bit of winter ‘cross racing. Canyon already has it’s top-end Inflite model, as ridden in the ‘cross worlds (when there used to be racing, how about that?) but the 2021 Canyon Grail is all about gravel. Whether that’s loading up and heading into the hills, gravel racing, exploring or just as a chunky road bike for those of us not blessed with perfect tarmac..
Canyon saw no reason to change the frames on the Grail for 2021, so the alloy and carbon frames (and yes, the crazy handlebars) remain, but the spec has been brought up to date to reflect the kind of top-end gravel-specific gears and brakes on offer from both SRAM and Shimano. This means that the 2021 Canyon Grail range can go from an entry level £1399 for the Canyon Grail 6 (or 6WMN) up to top end Grail CF SLX models that are specced with either Shimano Di2 GRX (for £4349) or SRAM wireless eTap (£4649)
Interestingly, Canyon has accepted that not everyone (especially those from more traditional road disciplines) is keen to go all one-by just because they’re riding off road. Many road riders find the jumps between gears too big on one-by systems, especially if the terrain isn’t that hilly. So there are several options in the range that feature full 2×11 setups as well as one-by systems for the more cyclocrossy, or choppy of cadence.
From what we can tell on the specs, if it’s a one-by system, it’ll be Shimano’s GRX and if it’s going to be a two-by, then you’ll be getting SRAM, with a wide 10-36 cassette, plus a 46/33 double chainset. Should be enough for most climbs, eh?
The higher end bikes will all feature the new-style short nosed Fizik Argo saddle. But don’t hang out here, the bikes are already on sale at canyon.com where you’ll see all of the new 2021 Canyon Grail models complete with full specs and prices.
Oh, and in related news, we’ve just heard that Grinduro Wales, slated for October and which Canyon is a sponsor of, has had to be cancelled for this year due to you-know-what. It will now be rescheduled for next July 24th, 2021.
