Were you to ask us what Vittoria is best known for, we’d have said tyres, then, er… well just tyres to be honest. It turns out the Italian company does much more than that. Inner tubes for example, and rim tape. And, as we have now discovered, it has a small range of wheels as well. The Elusion Carbon Disc is a high end carbon wheel for disc-braked drop barred bikes (I guess there was a clue in the title). Vittoria says it is suitable for gravel, ‘cross and road.
The details
We’ll spare you the hyperbole of the full press release, but according to Vittoria, the Elusion Carbon Disc is a winning “one wheel for all needs” kind of thing. Supreme riding performance, light weight, dynamic and responsive – we know you’ve read this kind of stuff all before. We have to say that we do quite like the shouty/not shouty graphics though.
The wheelset is tubeless compatible, natch, and Vittoria claims that its rim design makes installing and inflating tubeless tyres much easier, and holds the tyre in place even under lower pressures. The rim is available in two depths: standard 30mm rim and an aerodynamic 42mm version. Having said that, the internal width is fairly old school, at 17mm.
The wheels are built with 24 straight pull spokes and brass nipples (hurrah!), laced to Centerlock hubs. The wheelset weighs 1656g for the 30mm version and 1736g for the 42mm version.
We only have a euro price at the moment – a reasonable sounding €1050. We are checking UK availability and pricing.
