Yes, all of them. Its common sense if you think about it?

You appear to have overlooked “a)” there.

As for the others, it certainly sounds plausible, yes. This doesn’t make it any more (or less) factually correct though.

Sounds like you have quite an unhealthy relationship with food.

Oh right, so I’m 43kg I have been since I was 18 or so ( used to be a gymnast was muuuuch more skinny, had 4 pack and everything!!) and I don’t overeat, or undereat I use it to fill me up as sometimes I can’t afford to have a lunch!!

So doc and stoner and mymaninthenorth are ok with it, I’m good

I drink about 6 lites of sugar free cola a day (ASDA). If that was normal cola I would be very fat considering how many calories that would be. On the other hand it still messes your teeth up (acid ) wear enamel so I have am having expensive dental work probably as a direct result of this

Like a can of diet coke every day or so is gonna kill you or make you fat?

Artificial sweeteners are made from dried fairy wings. fairies need their wings to fly and when they fly this causes the breeze that makes the wind turbines turn. less fairies = less wind power = more bad coal. that’s what’s bad.

And everything on here is correct?

    oh yes, every single thing

Deliberately so. I don’t know much detail and can’t remember the details of a program a saw about it enough to elborate, so thought better not to. All I can remembers is that large quantitites does something nasty to your liver.

The other reason is that most fizzies contain phosphoric acid, the reason that colas rot your tooth enamel. They also leach the calcium phosphate from your bones, as your body compensates for the extra acidity in your diet.
Women who drink fizzies tend to have lighter, weaker bones & suffer more breakages than those who don’t. So if you’re likely to fall off a bike, don’t drnik them.

@Kryton – bollocks, show me the research about starvation response kicking in. As per Lean Gains site there’s evidence that metabolic rate doesn’t slow until at least 36 hours after not eating and could be as long as 60 hours. Unless people are only drinking sugar free drinks and not getting calories from food then it’s utter BS to link them to a starvation response.

Them triggering an insulin response is more interesting, I’ve not looked into myself but am aware of recent stuff being speculated about it. I have my doubts though and my own experience (obviously not scientific evidence in any way) is they don’t give me cravings etc. afterwards.

The main issue with diet drinks is they all taste rank, apart from maybe Pepsi Max.

    You see this:

The sweetners used are worse than sugar. They are, supposedly, a major cause of cancer.
a tv programme on channel 5 the other night seemed pretty clear on the subject, categorically stating that aspartame is carcinogenic and fattening.

    a) The aspartine is bad for you and causes liver issues.

    … it’s bollocks.

    no, no..

the bit about the TV programme int bollocks at all

there was definitely a tv programme about it the other night, I watched it and everyfin.. I even put a link in my about it..

I got called to account on a thread on here about losing belly fat a couple of days ago. I made the assertion that artificial sweeteners stimulate the body to produce more fat. In fairness I had got this from a documentary on Channel 5 and deserved all I got, as despite extensive research (a bit of googling) I’ve yet to find anything to corroborate my story (beyond unauthenticated hippy mumbo-jumbo). Anyone who believes anything on Channel 5 should be shot 😉
The weight of evidence would seem to say that most artificial sweeteners are no more harmful than sugar. That said the thought of putting purely synthetic substances into my body in any kind of quantity puts me right off. That and the fact that diet drinks taste bloody horrible of course..

You will find that they only give you enough energy to carry the full can/sachet into a trail but not enough to carry the empty can out. Evidence can be seen in the number of empty cans, bottles and sachets found at the sides of our trails.

    b) The “false” food makes you feel full, and then when you body realises its been tricked tells you to eat more to comepensate.”
Yes, that’s right. That’ll learn you. Your body hates you a little more every time you do that.

    c) If you manage to resist the outcome of b), your body goes into starvation mode and starts to store fat as an emergency measure.” Claxons going off and everything but they’re inside you so you can’t hear them.

    You’re funny. I like you.

What? like cheese? I don’t believe cheese exists in nature. We make it. Like we make the specialist plastics and high-grade alloys that make up a replacement hip. If it came to it I would be prepared to have a hip replacement and/or eat cheese.

Just three of the things that occur in nature that I wouldn’t want in my body: Uranium ore, rattlesnake venom, tiger shit.

Go on then. How do we make cheese then? More pertinently, what are the synthetic (not of nataural origin) elements?

the only thing i have read about sweeteners (aspartame) that i have seen some slight evidence to back it up is that they can decrease the uptake of phophorous in your body leading to slightly weaker bone structure over time.

i’m sure your body doesn’t “count” drinks as calories, thats why its easy to get fat drinking mucho alcohol/sugary drinks. welcome to be proven wrong on that though.

read once that diet drinks have much more caffeine than the sugary ones and that is why they are more addictive and people end up drinking tons of the crap (me included)

I gave up full fat coke for zero and Irn Bru for sugar free Irn Bru 2 years ago, plus I’ve upped my cycling but not changed my diet and I’ve dropped 2 stone. I can get through 4 cans a day btw

Hardly scientific but it worked for me.

never seen a thin person drinking diet coke have you?

I weigh 9 and a half stone, and I drink more pepsi max than anyone in the world. Except possibly that ChrisL, who is probably skinner than me (and just as wired on caffeine)

In fact if I had my webcam on, you could see a thin person drinking diet cola right now. Naked, obviously.

Aspartame has been found to be safe for human consumption by more than ninety countries worldwide

It’s worth noting that they have concluded it’s safe because they have NOT YET found a way in which it harms you. That doesn’t mean it’s not, of course, but if it is it’s pretty subtle.

And emsz – remember that people can eat shite and be skinny but unhealthy. Some people never gain any weight at all despite stuffing their faces with junk. Not saying that’s you of course, I know you’re healthier than that, but beware of drawing conclusions.

in the early 90s I had a mate known locally as ‘mountain bike mike’ he used to consume litres of coca cola..
when he started drinking diet coke for ‘health reasons’ he became a heroin addict..

    draw your own conclusions

erm… in factories. Either, big industrial factories or farmhouse kitchen factories. Cheese is a synthetic product. We don’t hunt it or harvest it. We make it.

    My point is that:
    natural =/= good
    synthetic =/= bad

what from the following list is NOT natural?
    Milk.
    Starter culture.
    Rennet.
    Annatto.
    Salt.

Due to the limited availability of proper stomachs for rennet production, cheesemakers have always looked for other ways to coagulate the milk. Only about 35% of worldwide cheese production uses animal rennet. Artificial coagulants are a useful alternative

Aspartame is a methyl ester of the dipeptide of the natural amino acids L-aspartic acid and L-phenylalanine.

So what ingredients of aspartame or NOT natural?

Just be careful where you buy your cheese and keep it natural kiddies.

I believe (CBA googling) that there are studies that show obesity goes with fizzy pop consumption, sugary or not. Association, not cause; may well be a marker for “shit diet”.

I also believe that fizzy drinks make your stomach empty quicker, which might just make you hungry earlier.

I offer no FACTs on the subject whatsoever – do I win ?

I’ll take you back to this post gentlemen, and this one too where higgo is clearly using the natural non natural argument. Cheese is a natural food made from natural ingredients, but if you’re happy in being so anal, go for it.
    EDIT:
I’m also quite happy with this part of the definition too.

    3.
    a. Not natural or genuine; artificial or contrived: “counterfeit rhetoric that flourishes when passions are synthetic” (George F. Will).
    b. Prepared or made artificially: synthetic leather. See Synonyms at artificial.

Is that the one where I say that cobra venom is ‘natural’ (occurs in nature) and cheese is ‘synthetic’ (manufactured) and I’d prefer the synthetic product in my body?

I am still of the same mind.
