My Dad wants me to update the company website which i haven’t got a problem doing but wandering what the best website building software is?

The software needs to be easy to use, (Dad will want to be able to update it if he can) be able to upload loads of pics of various jobs and easy to put in links.

I need to read up about metatags and the technical website stuff so i can try and get that side sorted.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Depends what sort of website you’re looking to create.

I quite like wordpress as a platform for building easy to use sites. There are plenty of custom templates and plug ins available to get it to do most things and the back end is easy for people to use to add content with no coding knowledge.

There are more sophisticated platforms that can do more and you could always build something from scratch but for simple content management wordpress is hard to beat. This Singletrack site you’re reading is based on wordpress.

WordPress would be the default choice for something like that – he can add blog entries for new jobs from any web browser, and it’s very adaptable.

I’d that makes a wordpress a pretty good option (and I am not a fan of it at all!). It’ll give you enough to get your teeth into but will take care of a lot for you.

Yes, WordPress sites perform very well in Google.

How easy it all is, is up for debate however. There are many many ways to build a WordPress site and depending on your needs, you will probably need to learn a lot of new stuff (whether it’s new terminology, site structure, small amounts of php/css, or just how to customise an off-the-shelf theme).

Once it’s running, however. With an hour’s instruction, it can be easy to update.

There is also not a lot it can’t do once you delve into the plugins/code/themes

Depends on the host, too – I’ve just transferred a bunch of sites across to TSOHost (as recommended on here), and installing WordPress on those was a single button press. No FTP, no config files, no messing with MYSQL, nothing.

    Yep, TSOhost are good.
But many hosts that use cpanel also have a ‘Scriptaculous’ one-click WordPress install (but not all).

WordPress would probably get the overall vote from the “web community” – and I have build and used WordPress sites for the sort of thing you describe and it is well suited. However, depending how much of a “ludite” your father is – he may prefer the “edit in place” functionality you get with Concrete5. It is another free platform that serves a similar niche. It is my default position for building sites for other people – because if they can’t build their own WordPress site then I think they will find Concrete5 more intuitive to use.

Thanks for all the input so far, will look into it. Knowing my Dad he will probably get me to update the website – he is probably showing willing on his part.
