that’s it really, what size works for you?

As small as possible, which in practical terms is 32t.

Unfortunately you’ll only have a 34 on the back if you’re 1×9 and on a 29er that’s compounded by the wheel size. 1×10 would give you a 36t rear sprocket. Unless you’re fit and the bike’s light it’s going to be painfull uphill.

I’ve got 32t (with a 12-36 at the back) on my Pitch and it’s painfull enough uphill, you’ll be geared about 20% higher!

took the 34t off my Fortitude Race 29er, it’s still low enough for hills and can let me cruise at 18mph for my legs look like they belong on a kenwood

I used a 34t chainring paired with a 11-34 cassette when i ran that combo and that was fine for where i ride. Alot will depend on how steep the hills you ride are.

You can buy a nine speed 12-36 rear cassette.
Depends on how fit you are but a 32 chainring would give a good spread and a good low ratio for stiff climbs
May spin out on the downhills though.

Dump the 12 on the back for an 11 too help.

32 front 12-36 cassette on mine.

    seems spot on.

34 with an 11-36 for me. I’m not very fit and it’s OK for me. .

32 with 11-34 for me, good for a day in the Lakes but if I lived there I’d want lower.

For Yorkshire and the Peaks its fine.

Nope, only a cheap one 😉 You can also mod it to get 11-36, though some might dislike the relatively big shifts (didn’t bother me in the slightest)
