We will be in touch
I'm likely to have spend a weekend in the Bavarian lakes area as part of a work commitment. I was wandering about some MTBing in the area or nearby in the Alps. I'll have a hire car so I can drive somewhere suitable. I will not be able to take my own bike so where would I be able to rent. Anyone know anything?
Thanks in advance.
when you say bavarian lakes, where do you mean? cheimsee, the biggest lake in bavaria sitting just before the alps? worthsee, big lake nestled in the hills? starnberg/ammersee, big lakes south of munich, about half-way between munich and the alps? or bodensee (lake constance), the biggest lake in western europe?
there is really good biking around tegernsee/schliersee/bayrischzell. it is where bionicon test their bikes. the train network is fairly extensive meaning you can do point to point rides as opposed to loops.
mtb-news.de sign up and ask on there. just write in english as most can read it. think there may be some routes already on the site.
i'll have a trawl later but i've got to go out and look for work right now....
bis nachher.
"big lakes south of munich, about half-way between munich and the alps"
Yep, Wessling not far from Hershing is where I'll be based. Unfortunately, I speak no German and I fear that few MTB shops in the area are really geared up for UK MTBers. On the plus side, I can go anywhere as I will have a car.
[Looks at Google maps] What about Garmish which is about 1 hour away? Does that have an MTB shop with hire?
Thanks for replying.
Once rode Garmisch-Mittenvald-Seefeld-Gamisch through the hills/valleys a long time ago. Garmisch or Mittenvald are full on tourist sites so hiring a bike shouldn't be a problem. Various races and the Transalp routes start in Garmsich too- do a google for that of that maybe and do the first stage? Ski lifts too, check their tourist sites to see what the deal is with bikes- good terrain in any case.
A quick google on one of the german magazine sites gives you this scroll down for routes pdfs at the bottom of the page (maps profiles etc). give you some ideas anyway (the final one looks good, gives you some info, links for local bike shops, mentions one of the gondolas takes bikes...).
Edit- if you want more jumps/dh stuff there are a few bike parks in Bayern- google "bikeparks bayern" might give you some results.
thanks for the tips crouch, I will look
have posted eine frage on MTB-news.de
will get back to you.
When are you over and what type of riding do you like? A problem you'll have at the moment is that there is still snow from around 1200m. I live in Augsburg, about 50km north of Weßling and have plenty of routes for the area.
If you like downhilling there is a bike park at Oberammergau, which is about 40km from you, chair lifts and 400m down with North Shore, if that's your thing (they hire bikes too).
A problem you'll have at the moment is that there is still snow from around 1200m.
Send me a mail with some more info and I'll send you some routes.
Elbows - I do normal XC/trail routes. I've done a bit of DH on an unsuitable bike in mincing fashion!

Hey Buzz,
I am a Guide for Mountain Edge so I hope you can excuse the Blatant plug. We are based in Kitzbuhel, which is about and Hour and a half south of Munich, and can be done on the train if you want to see some scenery.
We have a full fleet of Kona hire bikes and can get you discounts at the Leogang Bike park too if thats your thing.
most of our riding is XC style singletrack, but using lifts to gain some altitude. At the moment there is snow to about 1000m, but will be clearing away in the next few weeks.
Give us an email if you need any questions.
Chris
Kitz_Chris, if you are the Chris who was with Rob last year, why aren't you in Boulder?
Stewart, forget what I said about sorting you out with tours - if you want great riding and a good laugh, go with Mountain Edge. I was with them last August and they even got my girlfriend hooked. Just watch out for the 'Cake and Lake' tour!
Buzz
The Munich area is great for mountain biking, I live there and know many of the finest trails in Chiemgau, Tegernsee, Karwendel, Garmisch. Even the Isar trails in Munich have some amazing biking. It's a big area though and for just a weekend I recommend taking a look at Tegernsee and the Isar trails. Bike hire is a bit problematic - for Tegernsee you could phone the Bionicon guys up and ask them if they have anything, or in Munich phone Radsport Rösch. Drop me a line or give me a buzz when you're over and I could point you in the right direction or even join u for a ride if I have time.
later
Colin.
It sounds like there's a lot more good riding than I thought. If I go, it will be later in the summer when snow wont be an issue. Thanks for eveyones help (aren't STW people great?) I'll get in contact nearer the time.
Actually the Mountain Edge stuff sounds like a great holiday option.
poo-bums..... i've just moved from munich up north to coburg.....
could have had a little STW-deutschland folly..... would be nice to talk bollocks with a load of brits who have a sense of humour....
yeah, tegernsee to schliersee is a nice route. busy on weekends though.
there is a law stating that you shouldn't ride your bike on paths <2m wide, although this is then open to your descretion; whether or not you think the path will be busy. stupid law but some hikers can get a bit miffed.
ahh, the alps.

and this..... http://www.alpenwelt-karwendel.de/index.shtml?ak_gpstouren
have a look at the table under the map....
i'm led to believe that the trails are way marked but, it is worth getting a decent map - Topo or Kompass maps should do.
have a play with babelfish translator and if any probs with language just ask!
Hi all. I am hoping to reach Big Col, based on his posts, but I am making a general call to MTB heads.
I'll be in Munich Thursday, Friday and Saturday Oct 7, 8 and 9.
I race XC as an expert and want to hook up with a ride. I'll have pedals, helmet, tools, kit etc. but need a bike(large) and someone keen on showing the good stuff to me. Maybe Chiemgau, Tegernsee, Karwendel and or Garmisch.
Please contact me if it can be done- I can reciprocate when you reach New England here in the US.
Peace, Al(Raineman)
