Using Hope RS4 road hub, but off-road.

Any reason why this would be a bad idea? I know the RS4 only has 2 pawls in the freehub, but i’d be using a different one with 4 pawls.

I need it for a gravel bike wheel build, but on 24 hole rims. So restricted to this Hope hub (as i want to use Hope)

Axle end caps are available for 142 and maybe then boost? Are the hubs any less durable? it’ll be on a Hybrid flat bar, gravel, whatever you’d call old school MTB riding now.

I don’t have any experience of the rs4 but as far as I can see it’s just a pro 4 without the disc mount. Especially if you have a 4 pawl freehub.

That’s what I thought too, apart from you CAN get it with a disk mount now. Centrelock, but it’s got one.

Hmmm anyone else actually using it for this purpose that can add some user perspective?

i built a set for a mate’s “vintage” MTB that had 130mm rear spacing, although he doesnt exactly hammer it. The shells feel the same as MTB ones, and looking at the diagram, the axle seems beefy enough.

They are 130mm spacing in non-disc tho

i have one of these on a ‘road’ bike that has seen it’s fair share of gravel, shit roads and general disregard to riding surface, it’s absolutely fine

It quite specifically says

Axle width available in 130mm or 135mm ** NOTE 135mm option only available in 28, 32 and 36 spoke hole drilling**

Your best bet will be to email or ring hope (they have always been excellent when I’ve rung) and explain exactly what you have and want to do.

Ive got Hope RS4 hubs on my Gravel bike (Hope 20Five wheels)

Not had any issues with them so far and they prob do 50/50 road and off road

Engagement has always been spot on, not had them apart yet so didn’t even know they only had 2 pawls

Their trials hub has 2 pawls so I wouldn’t worry.

Interesting, must be pretty strong then….. Although i have shredded the pawls on a pro2 evo hub with very destructive results.

I have just noticed however, that Hope do a Pro4 in 24 hole, so i think that solves the issue i was having. I thought they were only in 32 hole. Doh!

Great hubs.
Have them on my Fairlight Secan.
Used them for many off road excursions including HONC and local bridalways.
Currently using as a daily commuter and still as reliable as ever!
Using 24 spokes and 2 pawl freehub as well.
It does make the hub a bit more quiet but is very low friction and spin up a bit easier.

Officially, the seals aren’t as good as they are lower drag.
I’ve been using one on an all weather towpath/road commuter for over a year, no issues at all.
