Any opinions on roof mounted bike carriers that hold the bike by the tyre, or the Yakima HighRoad in particular?

I’ve got a couple of old Thule 591s which I’ve had for years, and they’re fine, but I’m always a bit paranoid about frame rub from the clamp (wore the paint on a bike once). I’ve tried fork mount, but often don’t have space for the wheels

I also find the amount of flex in them annoying when trying to squeeze bikes close together on the rack. The wheel hold racks look sturdier in this regard, but then they’re only gripping the bike by the squidgy rubber bits.

Also curious about what happens when you put a bike on with a slow flat.

I have a high road, got it to avoid clamping the carbon downtube which didn’t work very well with the Thule, works pretty well, certainly not lost it! I haven’t used it with a slow puncture though. I don’t reckon you’d lose the bike but it might get wobbly. I guess depends how slow the puncture and how long the drive.
