  • Thin walled 8mm socket anywhere?

    Evening,
Looking for a thin walled 8mm socket for my Manitou forks. Anything available that’s cheaper than buying a whole bike specific tool set?

    Cheers

Get a cheap one and turn it down on a grinder

Box spanners will probably do you, so long as the torque isnt excessive. Cheap as chips too.

Thanks both. I had ground down a normal socket but managed to crack it on first use.

Will try a box spanner and see how it goes.

I tend to find that 12 point sockets are slightly thinner than 6 point sockets. Worth a look maybe?

if you hold it in the drill and spin it round it might help a bit

Surprised that it needed that much torque

Not a specific recommendation on this specific one but I found the cheap bit sockets with a hex shank are mostly thin walled. I use these for stuff like pedals where there is a specific thin walled socket or tool sold.

I bought the service kit (but sold it with the forks, sorry!) and it was very thin-walled.

If you can find someone with a metal lathe it’s a simple job to turn one down to size. See if you can find a friendly local model engineering group.

Try a set of monobloc tap box spanners – they start at 8mm and go up to 12/13mm, cost about £5-6 from Screwfix

Is a Shimano pedal tool any use?
    That’s really thin.
Edit just seen the price..you can borrow mine if you’re near Epsom.

Thanks all. Yeah, I was surprised I cracked the socket but guess that my ‘engineering’ skills were perhaps the problem here and I didn’t grind it down quite evenly.

Found some box spanners on amazon cheap so will try them.

    Cheers
